I have had a few meets where I've walked in to a home and wanted to walk straight back out! All because the home has been so messy and sometimes smelly, I know it comes down to my own personal ocd about cleanliness. But I do find it a massive turn off. I was wondering if others feel the same??

There is a big difference between a dirty, messy house and a lived in house.

I would hate to go to someone’s house that looked like a show home.

I wouldn’t be able to relax in it.

If the house was a mess and smelly I'd think the person made no effort that would then make me think are they clean or smelly too and I'd rather not find out I'd be walking out the door

I had a meet in a very messy house a few years ago. The couple were really nice though. Went back a few months later,still a mess then as well.

Must have been desperate.

Hiding in the shadows

Having moved into a 'doer upper' last year, I'm living in a building site. Wetroom conversion done & halfway through having downstairs walls knocked out & a new kitchen fitted .

My house, is as clean as I can get it, but it's impossible to keep it tidy.

Still 4 more rooms to go!

But then I don't accommodate due to unpredictable teenagers!

Untidy doesn't necessarily mean dirty or filthy, and there are various degrees of untidiness. It can look like it's lived in but not dirty which is fine. A house that is spotless and immaculate at all levels looks great, but doesn't put me entirely at ease. Some untidiness somehow fells more....genuine?

Never had a meet in a messy home. However having viewed many properties as a prospective purchaser I've been amazed at just how filthy some people's houses are even when they're selling. One had a carpet thick with dog hair another a festering poo in the toilet bowl.

I'm an electrician and work for a very large company who deals with rented accommodation. 99.9% of out tenants are clean as a whistle but the .1% who aren't ..... ffs I could write a book about the stuff I've knelt in. This is work related so I cannot even imagine in my wildest dreams going to a meet in a place like this. If the nooks and crannies in the house are filthy, then what about the Jack and Danny ???

Being a bit untidy fair enough we have 4 children and both work full time so know how hard it is to keep a house 100% tidy. But unclean and smelly no way there is no excuse for that.

we don't mind untidy as we all have diferent standards and some like us have our son his g/f and gkid living with us, so we have toys and clothes in piles everywhere,

however dirty and smelly is not acceptable, you could allways have a quick clean up and airfreshener if you knew you had visitors

who knows maybe they had already made and effort to clean and freshen up so what was it like before ?

We've had good experiences in homes in terms of cleanliness (only two) but we sort of got the right impression. Hotels are our absolute preference with this being a factor.

I do feel one can be untidy but still clean. And that some houses just tend to smell more than others. I would definitely make an exception if there were dogs or kids living there. I overnighted with a lady earlier this year in a house occupied by herself, her hubby, a lodger and two cats. It wasn't the most tidy, and they have a huge collection of DVDS, books and board games so it's quite cluttered....but it was sanitary and clean.

What does concern me is if someone's bathroom is really unpleasant. Or if the smells don't seem to be down to pets or kids being around.

When accommodating a lady, I make an effort to tidy and clean our home and might air the rooms. It's cluttered but hopefully decent.

In my case having a cluttered and sometimes untidy home has nothing to do with an untidy mind....I just have amassed a very large collection of records, tapes, DVDs and related paraphernalia in my 44 years on this planet. It's kind of my thing. But you can bet I will shower 30 minutes before I expect you to arrive and will have hoovered just before that.

I think it depends to be honest, I'm messy but I'm not dirty.

I've met someone before who's place was messy in that there was likes of folded up clothes on the settee and some laundry still out to dry but the place it self wasn't dirty (if that makes any sense) didn't put me off them

Our house smells because the previous owner smoked in it for donkeys years the walls need washing and carpet needs to go. We warn people so they can make an informed choice.

If you walked into my house after one of my long arse babysitting weeks you'd feel sorry for me and start cleaning

My two regular partners have immaculate, but cosy homes, which is why I love spending time with them.

When I meet them I'm washed and smelling nice.

A bit of a lived in look is ok but when theres not a clear surface in an entire flat is just minging! No need!

A guy I once met told me in advance it might be a bit single guy living alone messy. I can cope with a bit but when I walked in it was just filth and mess and utter disgusting. I stayed for a tea to be polite but on reflection I won't if that happens again. I didn't even want to drink the tea or sit on the sofa for how filthy everything was. At the social he looked clean and well presented which is weird. I have no idea how people can live like that.

I wouldn't advise anyone to ever come round to mine then. Wherever I live usually looks like a bomb has hit it (actually,that's my preferred method of tidying),books,C.D.s,papers,cuddly toys, scattered all over the place.

However,there is a big difference between untidy and dirty.

You will find no dirty knickers on the floor or under the pillow.the bathroom and loo are always spotlessly clean (and sharing a house with 3 young men in their 20's,I can tell you that is a full time job in itself),there are fresh towels,hand soap and loo roll,,no unpleasant marks or odours and,if I offer you a drink,the glass or teacup will be sparkling clean....no one has ever contracted typhoid on my watch (yet).

I also wash behind my ears and brush my teeth at least three times a day.

As I said,'dirty' and 'untidy' are not necessarily the same thing.

Ooh yes, this is the reason why I continue to politely refuse to return to a certain person's place but don't have the heart to tell them that the bedsheets smelled like fermented bawbag cheese. Live how you want but don't invite others.

Absolute about turn if the house isn't well presented, mine is and I am too, messy house equals laziness and no one needs that on a meet, my sense of smell is very poor so if I can smell it then it must be heaving to most other folk :O

On the contrary,an excessively tidy place is a sign of not having anything useful to do. I freely admit to being very lazy ,although I prefer to call it 'thinking time'. (mostly thinking about getting someone in to tidy up for me).

A lack of cleanliness,I agree,is extremely off putting. Safer sex should not have to involve a full cling film wrap.

2 things I find important - my cleanliness and having a clean, tidy and nice smelling home.

I'd be so embarrassed if either weren't right.

I feel so uncomfortable in messy homes. I don't expect show home, I am realistic about it, but if the home is uncomfortably untidy I can't relax as I feel dirty and I start wondering about the owner, if they can't be bothered with their home...

My home is clean, tidy and hopefully comfortable for others to be in, shoes off once you're through the front door please

An untidy mind is one where thoughts just pop in at random and are dropped,equally at random, to be picked up at a later date (or maybe not at all).And I agree,it sounds a lot more interesting than a tidy one.

OUTSIDE of Swinging I don't care if it's untidy. I can tell if it's cleaned regularly, or not, and that's what matters.

Too much airfreshner, febreeze, or yankee candles make me think they are trying to cover over something, I do not like it at all.

Anyway, within swinging it hardly ever happens that I don't meet in a club first. Once upon at time we met in a club, then at mine, and then at theirs. And I realised the person was a hoarder! Things and furniture everywhere! Even the bed was covered with things, AND the whole bedroom, whe had to use a mattress in the middle of the living room!

I was shocked as I would never have guessed it, they didn't come through as the usual hoarder.

Thankfully never had this issue as I check out background on profile pics too, if they can't be arsed to tidy for a photo where loads people going to see it, why would they bother for one person attending lol.
