They do for some and not for others, personally If someone winks at me and I wink back then that's an invitation for them to message me if they like

For us it doesn't as messages keeps us pretty busy so very rarely go through winks as there's hundreds of them every week.

They don't work for me because I never look at them

The only time I know when someone's looked at my profile is when I check out there profile and it says on there profile that they winked at me 4 months ago

Send messages instead. If you like the look of someone, tell them.

Why didn't you email when he winked back? I think that's how it's supposed to work. Anyway, it's still tonight. No rush. He may also have other things on.

If someone winks at us, we will look at them... If they're of interest then we will respond.

So from our point of view, yes winks can work. BUT! A message is always better and WE will always respond to a message.

Well, we messaged him first after we spotted him browsing our profile and also winked. He read and deleted it, but then winked back. So perhaps the idea behind winking is confusing for some.

We don't like them because they seem pointless and lazy. They are in a similar category to messages that say 'Hi how are you?'

They're not lazy. Its the online way of letting people know that you're checking them out.

In the real world if a subtle check-out is reciprocated, or met with a smile, then you would go over and talk. Or in our Fab case, message.

Is smiling at someone in a club or pub lazy? Should you just go up and talk straight away?

Why attribute a negative conotation to something that is perfectly acceptable? It may not be how you guys like to operate but it's not lazy - just different.

You guys are obviously free to operate how you want too. Just saying that we consider it as very lazy. The question has been asked and we are giving an opinion.

We use them for couples to say hello initially. Then if we get a wink back we message. And vice versa.

However we prefer messages from single guys to introduce themselves. We put this on the profile, so if a guy winks at us,he hasn't read our profile so is generally ignored! If can't be bothered to read about us we wouldn't meet.

As everything on this site, each to their own. If winking isn't working, try messaging.

I would look at messages first, so if I have a lot then the winks get forgotten.

If I've not got anything to read I'll check out my winks, but its not a priority.

I thinks winks were designed to be a bit like a forerunner to tinder swipe right. See a profile you like send a wink and if they wink back you know there is some mutual interest and that's the prompt to send a message, thus wasting nobodies time.

The flaw with that is that many are inundated with messages, many of which are unwanted, so there's no time or inclination to check winks as well.

It's a shame women don't check them. I have written some really nice and personalised messages just to see them never read. At least a wink is a quick way to show interest.

It must be hard with the amount of messages and winks some people must get

"Shows I have 565 winks that haven't been looked out ..."

I've just had a look and gad that was tedious. Checking profiles to see if I want to message them showed that it's an exercise in laziness for most of the winkers as not one on the first page meets my preferences that are on my profile and in fact most are so far away from it, it's obvious all they've done is looked at a pic and winked. Lazy lazy lazy.

I've been here many years and that's the first and last time I'll be doing it.

Excuse my ignorance here

When you receive mail, you get a small envelope top left corner, under your home bar.

Are you not supposed to get a wink signal there if you receive a wink.

Appears have to go to wink section to see if a wink received.

On the rare occasion I get a wink, I wink back and will sometimes send a simple message thanking the person for the wink.

As it doesn't happen that often, it is easy to manage!

I would imagine that it is a different story for the ladies

In the beginning, if I got a wink I would send a message back, which in the majority of cases was never replied to. So now I just ignore them when they come in. I treat them in the same way as an unprovoked friend request.
