I am not saying std's cannot be transmitted. If someone has chlamydia, gonorrhoea or the like, it will obviously contracted but realistically oral is the lesser of two evils over penetrative if no protection is being used. *Making me queasy.

I'd like to know how they know that. Is the mouth to genitals virus slightly different in some way? Is it hpv 1 on the genitals? Or does the hpv1 mutate to hpv2 when it touches the genitals. I need a doctor to explain this to me.

I've never seen a man or a woman insist on the use of a dental dam. Whether this is through willingness to take a (perceived) calculated risk, fear of upsetting the other person or ignorance I don't know.

Popular opinion from what I read seems to be that most people would rather go without than participate in protected oral. However on the occasions I have asked a guy to use a condom for oral he has always agreed.

The ones that I know do, yes (or at least tell me that they do); most of them are OTT about safer sex and have walked away from situations that wasn't right for them personally - it all depends on attitude I guess and birds of a feather flock together

Human Pailloma Virus-16, the strain responsible for cervical cancer, is also linked to mouth/throat cancer. There are no symptoms with this one and most people don't know they have/have had it. HPV positive throat cancer is commonest in heterosexual men and the more unprotected oral sex, the greater the risk. There's quite a few resent published papers on this but many people are unaware of the link.

I've never heard anyone say they've used a dental dam nevermind it being standard practice, but I have heard lots of people both male and female say they'd rather go without than use a dental dam. I think it's more to do with lack of enjoyment than risk of upsetting someone.

I can't talk for anyone else but a lot of the pleasure of oral sex for me is the sensation on my tongue and the taste from a lady's natural juices as she becomes aroused.

So it's a balancing act between risks involved and the pleasure that I am seeking from my sex. No form of sex is risk free and I opt to have oral without a dental dam but penetration with a condom. I know there will be an element of risk to this, but all the evidence points to a lower risk. But a risk nevertheless.

Oral with a dental dam would severely reduce my pleasure from oral, but if a lady asked me to use one I would.

I would suspect that catching an sti as a result of a condom breaking or falling off is just as risky as catching an sti from oral sex. As with all fun things in life (whether sex or skydiving) one takes a calculated risk and takes measures to minimise that calculated risk. The only way to be sure of not catching an sti is to remain monogamous. As as most of us on this site want to enjoy multiple partners we are all taking by that calculated risk.
