It could be argued that with improvements in infant life expectancy, advances in medecine that mean women don't die in cildbirth as often and the need for a reduction in the earths population evolution should be moving towards monogamy, not away from it. | |||

I say let's accept thet we're all more likely to give the theory that supports our way of thinking more credence and allow for the possibility that evolution is an ongoing process. Not all humans will have evolved to want multiple partners.

Few things spark more cinflict than disputed inherentance rights, especially when your inheritance is the throne of a country. Therefore, it's always been intolerable to have uncertainty over who the father of a child is. One can't reasonably expect society and culture to catch up that quickly. But monogamy is not the default preferance for the majority of the population so your choice is basically: - be a swinger and hope 'society' doesn't find out - be a cheater and hope your wife doesn't find out - get really, really interested in trains and hope your sex drive goes away You missed one. Be a swinger, fuck society and its attitudes which by and large are born from antiquated religious propaganda. ;-) S I'd dispute that it comes from religion. Though most women don't realise it, contraception is probably the most important development ever in the progression of women towards equality! For the first time ever we can have careers as we are not constantly 'breeding'! Another result is that we are finally able to 'indulge' in sex for pleasure rather than procreation - something men have done since the dawn of time! 'Sex for its own sake' has only been a viable option for the last two generations - until then women were 'forced' into monogamy as they were in an incredibly weak position if they became pregnant outside marriage. As someone has said - it'll take time for society to catch up to the idea of 'fun sex' outside of a loving relationship - but I'm pleased to note that my oldest daughter's generation (she's 25) are far more accepting of women's sexual freedom than mine were - and the word 'slag' (etc) is thankfully bandied about far less! My only hope is that in the future there isn't another surge from liberation/sexual freedom towards suppression and control - as historically these trends tend to happen in cycles (for instance - the Puritanism of the Victorian era) I'd love to see a society which is 'live and let live' within legal boundaries - but then I'm an idealist!
