We are from California and will be going over to the U.K. For a little vacation. Looking for recommendations on things to do and hopefully people to meet up with and show us around

I recommend Afflecks Palace, an "alternate" shopping centre, plenty of nic-nacs and bits, managed to find some real gems in there now and then.

Depends on what you are looking for, lots of places to visit in the centre, the village, northern quarter, printworks for bars, nightlife. Plenty of museums, galleries . Or Central library, John rylands library.

Should visit Liverpool while you're here. Manchester and Liverpool are both great cities

For play we like going to Cupids club. Have a look on this site at club reviews to help you choose.

Wow! Carlifornian visitors. I love it over there. But..

You'll have a much better time out in Liverpool.. Half an hour away.

This is very true, plus the surrounding countryside is lovely. In particular Alderley Edge

Leeds

I would suggest a trip to York.

Beautiful medieval walled city.

That depends on the purpose (business or pleasure) and duration of your trip?

I live in the city centre and apart from the library (and it depends what you're into) I wouldn't bother with any of the other places, in all honesty.

Liverpool is good if you're into The Beatles but you can get some great live music in Manchester and if you're short on time, then no point travelling hours to other cities.

I also take tourists to the Manchester United museum, Albert's Schloss, Mulligans Irish bar, Hawksmoor for a Sunday roast, Cafe Marhaba for a curry, Dukes 92 in Castlefield if it's sunny, The Briton's Protection for a real English boozer and some whiskey tasting, Cloud 23 for a cocktail and some awesome views over the city, Lark Hill Place (nearby in Salford) to experience a Victorian local street!

Try not to get sucked in by the 'homeless' and keep your money in your pocket, is also my advice. Up to you though.
