a male friend of ours has been tested for oral hpv virus he is not a swinger must have caught it in his youth he has been told it was from oral sex dose anybody know about hpv ? are we swingers at risk with oral sex

There are more than 100 different types (or ‘strains’) of human papilloma virus (HPV). Each type has a different number.

HPV is common. Most people have the virus at some time in their lives. For most people it causes no symptoms and goes away on its own. It is much more common in young people, probably because we develop immunity to the virus as we get older.

Some types of HPV can cause changes in the cells of the cervix or the lining of the mouth and throat. They are known as high risk HPVs. Doctors call these cell changes dysplasia. The changed cells have an increased risk of becoming cancerous.

Other types of HPV can cause warts and verrucas. These types of HPV are sometimes called the wart virus or genital wart virus and they include types 6 and 11. Warts and verrucas are most common on the hands and feet, in the genital area and around the anus. But they can be on any part of the body. Types of HPV that cause warts and verrucas do not usually cause cell changes that may develop into cancer. They are called low risk HPVs.

we do practice safe sex but not for oral but i never let a meet cum in my mouth im hoping thats enough to keep me from getting HPV virus

You seem a little naive on this subject. HPV is passed on via skin-skin contact, nothing to do with ejaculate. I would seriously suggest that you read up on the whole sexual health thing so you can make informed choices about what you are doing.

i was lead to believe that it causes cervical cancer as in if u have that virus cancer is inevitable ,yet i had cervical cancer over a year ago and was tested for the virus n was negative , the nurses at hospital said ur more likely to get cervical cancer if u have that virus but and im living proof u can develop it n not have the virus.i know the jurys out on what causes cervical cancer but i was told in post op clinic that u can have hpv for years they said it b on ur skin so the last message was right ,and not develop cancer but though less likely it is possible (as in my case) not have the virus and still develop cancer,theres alot of contradicting info out there !!!

Well i believe people will do what they feel is right for them. As long as you make an imformed decision then thats what matters, I say stop worrieing about other people and make sure you do what is right for you.

I to have recently be diagnosed with cervical cancer and tested negative for HPV. They do say that a lot of casses of cervical cancer can be attributed to HPV. HPV does not lead to cervical cancer in ever case, other factors can be smoking, oral contraception, and the amount of children you have had.

this virus can take 15+ years befor it causes cervical cancer

Only certain types of HPV, which can be transmitted from one person to another during sexual contact, increase the risk of cell dysplasia (abnormal cell growth) and/or progression to cervical cancer.

the virus is in your system forever, and instead of going away, it actually goes dormant.

if its passed one thro oral sex then surely anyone who has oral sex outside a marrage, long term relationship is at risk?

All infections are just as easily passed on through oral as they are through penetration, bare in mind that a man seeps pre-cum throughout sexual play. You are particulary more at risk if you have any type of leison or broken skin or even swollen gums "gingivitis" I know it's not great, but I personally have taken too protecting my mouth in the same manner I protect elsewhere, condoms!

It unfortunately is the friction on the skin against skin that spreads the virus so there always is a risk and as not everyone who carries the virus has warts Tobin some cases almost impossible to know if you are safe or not luckily hpv is benine and not life threatening and all it takes is to use condoms and dames .flavoured condoms are easy to find and if dames on their own isn't something you like add a little flavoured lub to it .

I have seen a few cases in hospital, young men in their 30s/40s, no other risk factors, with mouth/throat cancer. Blamed on things like HPV from oral sex as previously it was heavy smokers/drinkers in their 60s. There's over a hundred HPV viruses and even the HPV vaccination only works on a few.

Condoms are most effective against fluid spread STDs eg HIV, hepatitis, gonorrhea, chlamydia. They aren't as effective against STDs spread by touch eg HPV, syphilis and herpes and only work if the area is covered by the condom - some of the lesions are so small that you wouldn't notice them unless you were actually looking for them. A wart can range from anything from a flattish small bump to a florid big cauliflower like thing. My recent GUM nurse was telling me that those viruses have a habit of getting to where they want...apparently give oral to/touch someone with a wart etc and you could get get a genital wart too, presumably if you then touch yourself etc

Though may have just been trying to scare me...there was a bit of a silence when I answered her question about my recent sexual activity

But she soon gathered herself together
