I read somewhere a while back, that the control of STIs might have been a factor in turning our societies monogamous as groupings became bigger.

Well, I don't know about Goldie Hawn but I've seen figures from studies, ranging from 9 - 25% given as the number of children who aren't the genetic offspring of the man who thinks he's their father within a marriage.

I've also seen a study that found that of a sample of 15,000 men who claim to have never cheated on their wives, just over a third, say it's out of fear of being caught. In other words, given a scenario where they're guaranteed their wives will never find out, they will sleep with other women.

In my opinion, "staying faithful because you have no desire for anyone else but your spouse" isn't by far the overwhelming reason for couples staying faithful.

Now, in the purest sense of fidelity as it is expected in society, that should be the only reason.

Infidelity has been going on since the beginning of time. So, the question of whether fidelity is a natural state for humans, obviously can't be written off as an unserious question.

Evolution ensures there won't be a single answer for everyone because adaptive strategies are usually successful. The best estimates usually converge around 70% of the population predisposed towards multiple partners and 30% predisposed towards monogamy. It's not one or the other.

Actually the early begginings of the human race (homosapiens) weren't monogamous they were polygamists so though they had family units they weren't the stereotypical ones depicted today in us modern humans they were family units that encouraged sleeping with multiple partners

The answer isn't one or the other. Some of our ancestors gained reproductive advantage by focussing all their resources into monogamous relationships and others gained advantage doing the opposite. The polyamorous approach was the more successful of the two which is why more people are predisposed to it now. But ~30% of the population are still naturally predisposed towards monogamy.

yes but as the brain evolved and saw the sense of the family unit and the benefits to human life and an orderly systematic ritualised lifestyle then monogamy became the accepted way of life ,I mean is it great to be a grandad ? That is a question because I'm not one yet

A societal preferance for monogamy is linked to inheritance rights. Fews things spark bloodshed quicker than disputed inherentance. Especially when one's inheritance is a throne.

No the brain didn't evolve past it it was societally reprogrammed over time to think manogamy is "right". As I've previously said if that was the case there would be no necessity for swinging, yet it exists

If humans were truely sexually managomous we'd never be able to shag Anyone else even in the event of death of a partner, that however isn't the case.

It was either "Drive" by Daniel Pink or "The Modern Scholar: Evolutionary Psychology" by Allen MacNeill. I can't remember which sorry, but it's based on aggregating multiple studies as a sort of consensus ballpark figure.

Seperately studies of infedility have shown than 60-70% of married people are unfaithful at some point which suggests that most people aren't good at fighting their natural predisposition.

Even the singles here that would have a manogamous relationship is they find it, can't technically be monogamous as they sexual haven't been, they've had previous sexual partners, they are merely socially manoganmous because they believe it's "right" whilst in the dynamics of a relationship

It is very true, when a guy has so many women he instantly becomes a superstar amoung his friends and gain s respect, why is it so? It is because all the guys know this is how they feel inside but social conditioning puts them in check.

I love swinging because it is not reckless, at least to a large degree, some guys cannot handle having so many women , some can. Plus swinging has enabled women to do the same thing.

so, when you are in the infatuation stages of love (with only one person) and wanting to know all about that person only (coz they are your main interest), idealising them as a partner (coz you think they're 'the one') that is society shaping you? really...

even swingers go on about the 'danger's of falling for someone else and leaving a partner for someone else. they don't truly believe in pologamy either, the ones who think they should have a partner they swing with and do not enter relationships with others.

I don't about Ms Hawn But I did see a programme That explored human relationships that came up with a theory that Humankind are not really programmed to be Monogamous, but the needs of society and religion and other factors make us conform to it. How valid that is I don't know. I do know however they did not confine it to one gender.

With all the talk of evolution, social conditioning, ancestors were not monogamous, etc etc.., nobody seems to have mentioned the reason why even though it is obvious that more people than not want to have multiple sex partners, it still isn't socially acceptable.

Jealousy and similar emotions are the main culprits of why many can't handle unfaithful partners. These are feelings that can't be helped or controled, even when there's a conscious effort to do so.

This happens even amongst swingers. Couples who suddenly become jealous seeing their partner with someone else or singles who get jealous seeing a playmate with someone else.

So, what to do about these emotions? That's the question and the main reason why infidelity will never become mainstream.
