Several years ago i spent an evening uploading a few pictures onto a certain TV/CD site which i had a profile page ( not Fabs ) , and midway through my work my PC went blank and a screen appeared saying that I'd been caught by the Cheshire police constabulary in conjunction with Interpol sexual misconduct force ( i cant remember the actual wording now ) , the screen said i had illegal images on my PC and i had 7 days to pay a £100 fine or risk prosecution , i completely shit myself pulled the plug out of the wall and practically hid myself in the bathroom , I pretended I'd had imagined it but on restarting the pc the police message was still there , i had to get a pay thingy from the local newsagent with a code that i needed to put into a box on the screen to pay the fine , i had to clean my pc of all offending images , and if I'd done this by the 7days where up I'd get control of the computer again . Now the only images i had where of me , some very intimate but mostly just me dressed in lingerie , so nothing seriously damaging ( i don't think ) , needless to say i cleaned the pc of anything remotely related to my lifestyle which upset me , i lost 1and a half stone in weight waiting for the police to arrest me for indecency , my nerves where shot and i was sick to think people had had access to my private property , i still have nightmares about this time , i never leave any pictures on my pc at all now i keep them on memory sticks for safe keeping , I'm still wary about uploading anything even after all these years , I'm wondering if anyone else had had this experience , it was a very scary and unpleasant time , i wasn't hurting anyone as far as i was concerned all the sites i used where legit so why was I targeted...;(

The police tend to knock on doors rather than asking for money

You were possibly targeted because of the site you were on. Men not wanting to be outed in public, in court, could be seen as easy prey.

If anything suspicious like that comes up on my friends PCs I tell them to Google it. That usually brings up which scam it is, and how to get rid of it. Your scam was different to the usual ones that say your PC has been infected and you need to pay for an antivirus or removal software.

Scam & just random timing that you were uploading adult images, you possibly got infected from the site you were uploading to to be honest.

I've had them before, few years ago, bit of a pain to get rid of but not too difficult.

"The police tend to knock on doors rather than asking for money "

They do that because they take away your PC to check for illegal images. You don't pay an on the spot fine.

Yeah my family have been hit by that. It's known as ransomware and the belief tends to be in most cases, once you have seen that screen it's probably too late. They don't actually take your files, but they do encrypt them on your computer. Basically it's a scam.

Isn't this what also happened to the nhs last week?

Thing is if you pay you'll just be targeted again, and again.

As long as you have another device that you can google with then you'll always be able to sort it out.

It was a scam, similar to the ransomeware the NHS is affected by. You were probably infected some time before and a keyword on the site triggered the virus payload.

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

You can usually get rid of ransomware following procedures online by malware removers. I say usually because the NHS one has been particularly bad.

Make sure your operating system and internet provider updates are all up to date, and download a good free virus checker/malware spotter.

Sorry this happened to you. There are some real dicks out there.

Best one I ever had was when my ISP was given a Norwich Pharmacal court order to hand over my personal details to some porn company that had decided I'd downloaded their porn films.

They sent all these court looking documents, supposedly professional technical experts assessments that my ip was guilty blah blah blah, pay £500 now to stop all court action etc blah blah blah

Just arseholes
