No.

We go to clubs in Spain and loads of people there do not speak in Spanish.

If I had to try to seduce someone in Spanish I'd be celibate.

But think of it the other way round.

You going on holiday to a foreign country and going to a club.

Would you then become that 'highly ignorant ' person?

Does that mean you eavesdrop on what people are saying? I can tell you right now what we'd be saying .... who is that creep who is trying to listen to our private conversation. We'd be saying it in English, but l'd shout at you so you didn't come too near. Really, OP, do you think everyone is talking about you?

We are foreign couple, and between us we speak in our language, but if someone joins conversation then we speak English so everyone can understand. And there is nothing ignorant about this.. Is just easier for us to speak in our first langue... But You can always learn another languages if you like

Not ignorant at all . If English is their second language they probably find it a lot easier to speak their first language .

Others people conversations are nothijg to do with me so whether they are speaking English , Japanese or using mime to communicate I'd mind my own business .

Does it matter? If it bothers you that much then don't speak to them? Go somewhere else? There's umpteen different options you could choose from in that sort of circumstance

I don't have any issues with people in clubs speaking in whatever language the choose, just like in Tesco or anywhere else for that matter.

If they want to chat with me though it has to be English as i don't speak or understand any other language.

In England we native born people speak English. Anyone coming to England should speak English. If they don't understand it and can't speak it then they should make use of the return portion of their journey ticket and don't come back until they learn to speak English.

I work in London and feel like a foreigner in my own country as lots of immigrants yap away in their own language. Racial integration? Forget it.

And if you need to know what they're talking about, just go say hi and ask

I think attitude demonstrates ignorance not language.

What they're planning? Do you think they're going to kidnap you from a swinger club?

What's sneaky about speaking in their native tongue. I do it all the time when I'm abroad. And why is speaking in their native tongue 'doing what they like'? So? You don't ever do what you like here?

or is this some kind of 'they're foreign so they should do what I like'? Bet it is, isn't it?

If it was a threeway conversation or we were speaking to another couple on English and they then started speaking polish for example (a language I know nothing of)

Then I'd find it quite rude.

But just a couple talking together in another language wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

We met a lovely foreign couple at Chams on Sunday. There was a bit of a communication issue and for that reason only we declined the offer of playing with them. For us, it's important that whoever we play with understands our rules, and it's important to understand whoever we play with. However we have no issue with them talking in their own language

Nothing like a forum thread to show you people you absolutely don't want to meet

Someone who is speaking a foreign language while living and working in the U.K. is automatically someone I would consider worthy of respect, purely by dint of the fact that they have taken the enormous leap of faith required to move to a new, unfamiliar country with an unfamiliar language and to make a go of it.

If, in a social situation, they felt the need to revert to their own language, then so be it. I have Polish colleagues who speak their own language to each other in the office, in no small part just to hear their own language being spoken while they are far from home!

It must be incredibly daunting to have to live 90% of your life in a different language, and anyone who does so I feel deserves my respect.

Whilst I do wish I was better at it ... I'm am proud to say that we can converse, in a very basic way, in Spanish, French, German and Italian.

It irritates me on holiday when people cannot or will not even attempts the basics, but hey I guess our European cousins really appreciate being shouted at 'DO .... YOU ..... SPEAK ..... ENGLISH' in a slow moronic drawl that helps to emphasize the intelligence of the people asking the question.

Your initial comment and your response tells me I was correct with the first part.

There are millions of people all over the UK having conversations you don't know about - are they also planning something and being sneaky?

There's only one example of ignorance I can see and it's not the people speaking in a 'foreign' language

We would happily let you speak to us in a foreign tongue ... think it would make things sexier .

We just have to be careful about those people who might start judging you as they don't have the intellect to understand you.

l find it very very ignorant and l avoid them. My great granddad never spoke English and my gran made their sons only speak English in public. They were only encouraged to speak their language between each other in private. lf you can't even speak the language, you shouldn't be here.

lt's about respect and principle, alas many people loathe their own culture to the extent that they 'respect' someone for refusing to learn their language. The mind boggles. Self-flagellation basically.

A) You are assuming that because you don't hear them speak English that they can't

B) how many English people live in 'foreign ' countries and never learn the language

C) you are an idiot

You may want to seperate your text from others when you quote.

Also when you are criticising how well people use the English language maybe grammar check your own.

Agreed!! I happen to have been lucky enough to learn different languages at school, so I speak 3 languages other the English, but I know I am the exception rather than the rule.

It's always fun surprising people though, when I used to work on a reception desk it always used to amuse me... no one ever expects a quadrilingual receptionist!!! "

It must be incredibly daunting to have to live 90% of your life in a different language, and anyone who does so I feel deserves my respect.

so every immigrant is a different race?

automatically assuming because people are talking in their own language..means they cannot talk ours?

get back to the 50's, you don't belong in this day and age.

Ok when it comes to socialising in a club it could be difficult(not impossible), and moreso when attempting to play if there is much conversation needed.

Sometimes a smile, a yes,or no...is as simple as people need.

I would say it is not ignorant for people to talk amongst themselves in their own language..I seriously doubt they would try communicating with you in their native tongues and that might mean using a little extra patience and understanding if you are interested.

Agree on the terms that you need to learn the language if you move to another country... meanwhile, many (I'll say tourists) go to other countries on holidays and expect their arses to be licked in their language.

Should you learn the languages of the countries you visit when you're on holidays? Or possibly living temporarily due to work?

If you're answer is No than you are coming across as someone hypocritical.

Don't know about that. Many people are just sheep and think adopting hard-line Left wing mindsets from the 1960s and from London - regarding culture and society - is 'Avant Garde' and an indication of how enlightened they are: in reality it looks pretty silly.

Block away.

Proud to be part of a community of people where the majority are open minded and seem to have a live and let live attitude.

As a born and bred British person of foreign heritage I would like to thank the OP for allowing me to see how many great people are on Fabs.

BTW Mrs Frog is Latino and The HOTTEST woman I've ever laid my eyes on! I couldn't speak her language when I first met her in her country. If she had the same dim witted attitude I wouldn't be the lucky fella I am today.

The anti-British, anti-Western, cultural streak isn't what I'd call 'open-minded'. False synonym. Open minded until you disagree. Then you get called a racist and uneducated. And people wonder why things like Trump and Brexit are happening.

Anyone who does what most immigrants do by leaving their homeland, learning multiple languages, adjusting to new systems and culture all while raising families and working deserve respect. I know I would struggle like hell to do that.

Oh please spare us the bullshit. My family came here as refugees so I can veiw it from a different perspective. It isn't hard to come here at all. It's sooo easy: the high living standards, the free money and Beth care, free education.. It's really one of the best nations on Earth with one of the most accessable languages that's not too hard. They can't believe it and think the British are complete mugs for allowing it.

And notice you imitate a English working class accent while taking the piss. It really shows what pro-immigration people think of the native British.

Not quite sure how what I said is anti-British ?

The majority of people who have posted in this thread are not threatened by people speaking in another language. I'm in South America and have been for past 3 months. Everyday I speak in English to my wife, people are fascinated by it, ask me where I am from and want to know more about me. They are certainly not threatened by me and my ability to stutter a few words of Spanish.

I imitate it because I was brought up in a working class family in SE London and that is the accent I hear spouting the same horseshit every day.

As for your stupid little comments English is one of the hardest languages to learn.

As you say your family were refugees I would expect a little more understanding of the challenges they face rather than spout tripe and abuse those following in their footsteps.

Ps who said I was pro or anti immigration?

I said I have respect for what they have done and that I would struggle to do it.

So get you facts straight before you open your own box of bullshit next time.

I have first hand experience of refugees from war. They are scared for their lives and grateful for any helping hand. It can reduce a man to tears very quickly. It can change his life even quicker.

This countries problem is not with the hard working imigrant. It's with the lazy.

I have worked since I was 15 and reaped the benefits of it. Yet how many people have a paper round now compared with 30 years ago? Kids simply dont have a work ethic and that doesnt help them in later life.

"Maybe some people are paranoid, and think that all foreign people talk about them. But don't worry, we have better topics to discuss.

And if you need to know what they're talking about, just go say hi and ask "

They might reply back in English

I travel a lot and if I'm honest it's the English that are the most ignorant abroad...They expect everyone to speak English . Seems to be a colonial thing.

My experience is that most other countries make a much bigger effort in learning another language....but as one poster said it's turn on in broken English and another accent.

OP you should see it as an opportunity to help them out and offer them personal tuition beats any filters we use on her to stop people communicating with each other lol.

There is no understanding needed. It's fucking easy. What's so hard about it? Im telling you what they told me but that doesn't fit your "pity the poor immigrant" narrative. Why do you think they stayed?

So no, it's an overdone narrative that need retiring. It doesn't make you look clever nor enlightened, it merely highlights of left wing this community is and why it was such a shock to so many that Trump and Brexit won.

Free everything !!

Sick and tired of hearing that statement!!

I had to prove a huge income and savings for my wife to be granted a spousal visa to live in England for 2.5yrs and then I have to prove this once again after that time has elapsed. It cost a small fortune to even submit the application!

She has NO right to public funds of ANY kind and quite honestly we do not want any. I have worked since I was knee high to a grass hopper and will continue to do so as will she.

Fuckin does my nut in hearing that all these foreigners come here and everything is free!! No it isn't !!

As for culture, once we begin a family they will be taught about her ancestry and mine. Taught to respect people from any background and be left to make their own minds up.

1- non Europeans have it harder to get here.

2- I'm taking specifically about refugees there.

3- My ex was from the states and we had to deal with it.

4- if you think that the system isn't being taking advantage of then you are in denial at best and decietful at worst.

5 - in a only a few years she will have right citizenship and will have unfetted access to all benefits and any kids education will be free. Plus education. Plus Etc etc. I looked into all this.

"In England we native born people speak English. Anyone coming to England should speak English. If they don't understand it and can't speak it then they should make use of the return portion of their journey ticket and don't come back until they learn to speak English.

I work in London and feel like a foreigner in my own country as lots of immigrants yap away in their own language. Racial integration? Forget it. "

Are you a member of UKIP by any chance or just a member? This attitude is what is wrong with society in my opinion. People like you are the reason minority languages are disappearing.

"Does anyone else find this highly ignorant?"

Only if the people in question are speaking another language in a circle that don't speak that language.

However, it's no more ignorant than a British person going to another country and not trying to speak the native tongue of that country.

"Does anyone else find this highly ignorant?

That was pretty much what I was thinking.

Mrs is German and speaks pretty much perfect English. Mr is English and speaks decent Spanish and enough German to get by.

We go to clubs in Germany, Spain, France and Holland and when talking to each other we always use English.

However in Germany and Spain we can switch if need be.

Most people will speak in the language that they are most comfortable with so, for example, couple of guys from Poland may speak pretty good English but will always revert to their first language when talking to each other.

It isn't ignorant, it's natural.

"Nothing like a forum thread to show you people you absolutely don't want to meet

It must be incredibly daunting to have to live 90% of your life in a different language, and anyone who does so I feel deserves my respect."

Anyway, remember that about 500 years ago, when English, portuguese and Spanish set up to find lands that were "already discovered" , they didn't learnt the natives' language. They massacred the natives into learning their language. What goes around, comes around. Luckily for us, the new foreigners aren't torturing us or raping our families in order to do understand what they are saying. They do try hard to learn English.
