its more to do with the back size than the cup size...

if the back size goes up or down that dictates whether its a single or double letter

I have no idea what you mean. Time for some research. But it begs the question can you have BB and CC? I have never heard of them.

The letters i.e. DD are the cup size, the actual size of the boob part if you like. The 36/38 etc is the width around a woman's body, i.e. across the back and around the front.

36E here. The letter denotes the distance between the ribcage and the fullest part of the boobs. So a few years ago I was a 40F. I've lost weight so my ribcage has gone down 4 inches but my boobs have only lost a cup size worth of volume.
