Sooo, last night I was on fab, browsing profiles, one popped up local to me, I clicked on it, it was for a 33 year old called Millie, it'd been active for 35 mins. It included a Kik address, and as I use Kik regular for chatting I dropped it a message. The lady denied all knowledge of being on fab, nor from the West Midlands, I tried to go back and screenshot the profile and it had vanished, I questioned her about it and she denied that she was looking for NSA fun or adult parties, then dropped the bombshell that she was 15 and was reporting me!! As soon as I saw her age I blocked her. 10 mins later I receive a detailed message about our conversation from kiks online security and that my personal data has been retrieved and forwarded to a local police department!!

As you can imagine I didn't sleep last night, and no idea where this is going!

I'm a father of two girls myself, recently DBS/CRB checked myself as its needed for my job working with over 12's. How much trouble am I in?? I was logged on to the company wifi at the time (family Business) so there is a solid IP address.

I genuinely feel sick.

More likely, it's some sad bloke with no life, yanking your chain.

Although does bring to mind one thing for you, maybe don't use company internet to access adult sites? You never know, they may check and you could end up in trouble.

My guess is it's some sad, lonely bloke too.

We have a few messages, friend requests and contacts from what appears to be single girls. We are very careful what we say and most of the time we just ignore them anyway.

Anyway you must have mentioned that you had got her Kik from FAB so if anything does come back to you then that proves you had been set up since you have to be 18 to register on here.

Probably the best advice if you contact the police yourself then it goes a long way towards you being innocent. Also contact the site as a lot of data is held and not deleted. It goes to show you should always confirm you are talking to who you think you are before any lewd conduct.

She could have been 15 and found it funny to set up a fake fab account then get scared and delete it. Anyone can say they are over 18 if I. D is not needed. Got to be really careful on here.

Huge huge thanks for your support and advice, as you can imagine I'm a bit apprehensive about work today! Her Kik profile pic was of a female but certainly looked older than 15, but means nothing nowadays. I had thought about going to the police myself but might be opening up a case they knew nothing of. My thoughts is she was 15, on here and panicked, as did I when she said she was 15! Pretty much cleared my Kik out whilst shaking like a shitting dog! I'll pop back on at lunch if I'm not locked up, every time the reception door goes today I think I'll jump a little!

I think you are worrying over nothing. You have said yourself that as soon as she mentioned her age you ceased communications... You haven't done anything wrong and even if the police pick this up they would see straight away what's happened. The case would be closed pretty much instantly..

Sorry to hear you've got this worry. I'm sure it'll all work out fine in the end. At the end of the day, if police do become involved(which I doubt they will) they will be able to trace that she she was on Fab, insinuating she was at least 18, so you aren't to blame.

These silly girls seriously need to think about their actions.

Assume that any contact details openly displayed are a scam of some description.

Why would you quite frankly? It's bad enough filtering people on here by all accounts!

Also, never, never used work computers for your personal life. Facebook is enough for a formal warning and any sexual content even more secure.

It's possible that this was a revenge posting of her Kik by a twatish ex or wannabe boyfriend.

This is not likely to amount to anything but you'll know for next time.

OP this happened to me quite a while ago so I can appreciate just how sick you felt,I had the same reaction too, but many months later I still haven't had a knock on the door so if I was you,definitely don't go to the police because I honestly think there's no need....hope it's helped put your mind at rest

As others have said, could be an old man being "funny" or she could be genuine and she fell out with some sick friend who signed her up on here without her knowledge.

Trust me I am a lawyer and you have done nothing wrong and acted only in good faith and believed reasonably in your opinion that's she is paver 18 years and you had no reason to beleive that's she is not, based on the Fab profile. You did a good thing about taking a screenshot of their profile.

As long as you didn't continue to chat and said something incriminating after she revealed that their age is 15 and not 18, then you are in safe.

This looks to me that it's a work of an sicko. Have you reported the profile to the administrator here, so they can bloke any further profile creation and block their URL ( not sure our admins are that creative and forthcoming), so no one else suffers like this ...

Also don't do anything from conpanies secured internet connection, since you never know when they use it against you

Nope, I sent nothing indecent or asked for anything indecent. I perhaps asked one too many questions but I am inquisitive. The very second I saw her age she was blocked. My concern was the personal message to me from Kik themselves, not an automated response. Your advice is helping me relax a little. Thanks again

Could be one of these paedophile hunters that are popping up. They setup adult profiles on sites then tell you they're kids once they get you off site to see if you'll continue chatting. In those instances people have been locked up but only where they've shown they're happy to continue the pursuit after finding out the decoy's age.

That she knew my Mam going to message my message was thinking good men bad etc got same message About the police something about sexual harassment? I didn't sleep cause I'm crb check too and just happen again just now saying that got too mAny compliants that know my IP address and full name that police will be coming at my door tomorrow and that need legal advice going ban from social site , I'm not going go to sleep I'm worried

Breathe, calm down and relax. Look at the details. 'Police department' - an american term not used over here by anyone who is serious. If it were to be an attempt to report you to the police (which its not) the police will have your chat log, they will see that you genuinely thought she was 33. They will also see that you blocked after the claim of 15 yo, all showing your genuine intent and that you havent done anything wrong. Report their action to the Police if you feel inclined.

OP, I work as an investigator and keep a close eye on fraud patterns and cyber security.

Almost certainly this was a 'sexting' fraud, either not brought to any attempted payoff because you exited the 'play' 'script' early. Or, as others have suggested, it was the very similar work of someone who enjoys messing with people and/or is just setting up their scam.

These scams are currently very active of sites such as pof, tinder and craigslist (and, so it seems, perhaps fab. Sad days). These have lots of variants, and I won't try to catalogue them here.

But don't be too stressed. From what you have told us, you seem in the clear.

Just as it is trivial to forge any given email address or mask web url's, anyone could create a kik username that appears to be legitimate security (afterall, how would you know).

All they did was repeat information back to you that you most likely revealed already in your fab profile and/ or kik conversation.

But, do beware. Most people have little realisation how much information they leak. And, by piecing together individually innocuous pieces of information from across various platforms, quite a complete picture of many people can be built up quite easily (mosaic theory of classified information release).

We aren't talking national actors, or even advanced persistent threats here. Even Nigerian scammers are known to be becoming more sophisticated in this area. And, I hate to say, weirdo stalking types too.

So you were right to be wary and back off. I would not worry further, but if this adds to a (reasonable) level of paranoia in the online world, then consider it a blessing in disguise. There really are a lot of miscreants out there looking to profit and sow misery.
