No I don't.

I think there are different types of long term relationships and some just aren't designed to be life long but I don't believe every relationship will hit problems at 7 years

no. i was with someone for 11 years and never felt the urge for anyone else at all. we had a miscarriage though and i wasn't the supportive one any more and wanted him to be that so that changed everything.

i did cheat on him because he emotionally went looking for someone else.

so it's more whether you enjoy stability or variety i think.

I've had many itches but not one 7 years long! More like the 7-month itch! A relationship that's about seven months is the best as you're never together long enough to get bored of each other and you often graduate to a relationship with a friend of your partner. I went through a long train of girlfriends all of whom were in a friend-chain. Ditto many of them with my male friends. All very friendly until you accidentally graduate to going out with her sister lol!

No. But I think some people pull out all the stops when dating, and then settle into lazily taking things for granted. When this happens, it is inevitable that eventually couples can lose their way.

Personally, if I had to start dating again, I know I'd never find anyone like Mrs ddc, which is why we still go on dates together, even now.

(in a couple of weeks we'll be starting our 5th 7-yr period together )

I think of it as when people start to question monogamy, and then often cheat, go behind each other's backs etc. So if you are dogging either together or which each other's permission, you can scratch that itch together. Perfectly healthy in my opinion. Humans aren't designed to be monogamous, so you can fight against that, or embrace it.

I think you should qualify that by saying "some" humans aren't designed to be monogamous. There are successful monogamous relationships.

The phrase 7 year itch originated from the biological sense that over a period of 7 years each cell in your body regenerates, so you should technically only get it at the ages of 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56..

It should technically only apply to your relationship if you got together when you we're one of these ages OP

While there are obviously distinctions between sexual and social monogamy, I have to say that sounds more like a justification than a scientific study. Many higher mammals are monogamous since being so increases the likelihood of the survival of their offspring, and hence their genes. The "sowing wild oats" method works well when you're playing the numbers game, but humans can't realistically do that.

Besides, if monogamy weren't the norm, how would Channel 5 be able to peddle so many "Feckless Single Mother" programmes?

So I still stick with what I said above: all relationships need constant renewal or they risk withering.

I think it's pretty obvious that no men are naturally monogamous. Monogamy is a discipline we impose on ourselves. It's not something we, if given a free pass by society and our partner, would naturally practice. Women are different as they risk getting pregnant so they willingly police themselves. But even here it seems once that risk is mitigated through contraception they too may feel monogamy is more of a discipline than something innate and natural to them.

Some people are better at maintaining this discipline of monogamy than others and in many cases it is a hugely rewarding discipline if practiced with the right person. But it's not "the norm". If it were it wouldn't be so bloody difficult lol

I don't believe in it. The idea of everybody naturally falling into the same cycle seems ridiculous to me. In my experience of friends and family, those who were going to split up did so in the first 3-5 years of being together.

I think what explains the confusion we see in our culture is that coupling is natural, perhaps even for life, but "faithfulness" is a cultural construct.

Plonk 100 single people in a utopian free love commune and about 70 will couple up... but about 80 will continue having sexual encounters with non-partners. However... give them all membership to Fab and all they'll all remain single and just start playing with themselves lol

Monogamy's entirely redundant as a social construct in our modern society. It was a construct given to us by organised religion. Both religion and monogamy have been consigned to the dustbin of history. Human society is consequently happier and much more in touch with its base instincts. Few creatures in the wild indulge in monogamy. I also believe women are at least as naturally promiscuous as men. Men are programmed to seed as many women as possible and women are programmed to get the best quality sperm. They're always on the lookout and will take it whenever and from whomsoever they can. That's human nature!

The condom has freed sex up to the most natural want of all - fun! We all want fun and rarely get enough. Sex works for both sexes hence why many regard sex as their fave hobby. I have some non-fab friends who go to a sex party every week - just like they go to golf or the local WI. Casual sex is a fun past-time. Share the joy!
