The loose use of the word professional

I get guys stating this all the time when I'm genuinely not remotely interested in their career paths - after all I'm not going to be marrying them!

My definition of a profession is a doctor, teacher, nurse etc but quite a few tell me when we chat that they are in fact carers like myself, work in retail are on benefits etc. I don't care anyway but why insist on using the term professional in the first place?!

Guess it's an attempt to make themselves more appealing in a lot of cases, or to convey that they're from a certain part of society.

As others have said though it seems to have become a catch all for "employed".

Yeah what's a professional couple too if I were to meet them wouldn't be interested what they did just was a normal couple. I would rather make mistakes than fake perfections

If someone describes themselves as a professional I see it that are describing themselves as doing a job that they've had to do a certain amount of personal development for, and requires a certain level of ambition. Some people might feel they have more in common with someone if they have a similar outlook to themselves regarding career. Others might regard this as classist and snobbish, and feel that what job one does has no reflection on how well people get on. And others might feel it makes no difference because they want just sex and minimal conversation.

People can be professional arseholes. I don't really understand the use of the word on profiles here. It doesn't add anything in my opinion.

As we've said before, if you can sign a passport then in our book you're a professional, if you can't you're not. The Royal charter mentioned above is a great point. If you've been a decorator for 30 years you're not a professional bod, granted you'll be an exceptional decorator which is very different.
