Was just wondering last... Say you are a Doctor, Teacher, Lawyer, MP, social worker, Child protection officer etc, etc and your boss calls you in and says they have information that your are on FAB or a similar site. Where do you stand professionally & legally? Is your job at risk of is it a case of consenting adults/nobody else's business what I do in private etc??

I have a friend that works on the railway, his bosses found out and he very nearly lost his job..... he had to delete his profile or he was going to be sacked . Some companies trawl certain sites looking for employees that they suspect are up to no good

Depends what your contract of employment says. If there are notices about bringing the company into disrepute, tarnishing their reputation, causing embarrassment etc you'd be on very dodgy ground.....

You're entitled to a private life but equally mustn't bring your profession into disrepute. So no broadcasting what you do on your profile and definitely no pics at work or in uniform.

Depends both on what policies the company has regarding social media and more importantly can your profile be linked to your employer. Don't mention who you work for and certainly don't post pictures in your uniform if you have one and in reality there is little the company can do.

Definitely on dodgy ground if you are browsing/using during work time.

Otherwise, don't post anything that shows you at work, anything to do with work and you in any work uniform.

What you do in private can affect your job, it's pretty naive to think otherwise.

Check your contract / working practice code, is there anything about social media usage?

I work in employment law. I retire in three weeks aged 56, after earning enough money from people like you, who naively think they can say and do anything they like outside work.

On another thread about this someone posted they work for the department of works and pensions. If they had their employment on their Facebook page and a picture of themselves with their DWP lanyard posting "I hate immigrants" they'd be sacked for bringing their employer into disrepute.

An old employed had a problem with me being poly, and they discovered that I also went to sex clubs on the weekend.

They tried to intimidate me out of my job.

I called their bluff - and followed the grievance procedure in the company handbook against HR themselves.

I came out the other side quite sucessfuly, as I proved that being poly and going to sex clubs made absolutely no difference to my job.

Know your contract. Know your employee handbook. Know your legal rights. Most importantly - know exactly how constructive dismissal works (and be prepared to hand your notice in the moment that they threaten you so that you can start a claim at court).

Your job would only be at risk if you post sufficient information on here to be readily identified .

Employers would only be concerned if you identified their organisation or accessed a site of this nature on a works pc .

All of the comments on this thread, plus the recent story in the papers about that police officer have convinced me that enough is enough. I certainly don't wish to jeopardise my current job, plus with me in the next stages of being shortlisted for two jobs that I'm applying for, I certainly don't want to risk that either.

Therefore all my pics have now been set to private. I may have to consider leaving Fab altogether which is something I don't want to do, but my job is my financial means of paying my bills and supporting my two year son.

We have face pics in 'friends' gallery. But we feel that those on our 'friends' list looking at our pictures don't know where we work (unless they were a very good friend and we chose to tell them). So the way we see it, our face pics are just random pictures that could have come from anywhere, and are unrelated to our jobs.

I'm my own boss but I'm still careful no face pictures in my public gallery as it would most likely cost me some customers if it got out .

the problem with fab is its to well know two of my regular play partners would never join here for that reason alone the both work in the kind of job where there are very very strict rules on social media sites .

both have very good but stressful jobs with great pension plans both are about 10 years off of being able to take early retirement with full pensions.

so with that in mind they would never join fab for the reason I've already listed .

I'm on here and if we ever want a third I'm the one who will and does organise that sort of fun for the reasons I've already given and to save them the hassle of doing it you know sorting out the fuckwits from the genuine .

This happened to me when I was on the guys site. I went into work and someone had printed my profile out and put on a staff noticeboard with 'who would have thought' printed above it. The pics I had displayed publicly were also printed, which showed the direct web page address.

I was called into a meeting with management and HR and they had also contacted my union rep to attend. I was read the root act, mainly due to displaying my verifications and the fact they were explicit.

Long story short, I was suspended pending further enquiries, on full pay. The HR manager was a friend and I was told I faced my contract being terminated, but she said if my profile disappeared, they could do nothing, but that they would be checking if it was still online.

I deleted my profile and had 9 days on gardening leave. I was reinstated with a first written warning. The advice given was "not to undertake any such action that has cause to bring (employer) into disrepute, nor cause members of the public to question my integrity."

Not a nice experience at all. My friend in HR though said that they dealt with hundreds of similar cases each year.

I work for a large, public sector employer, in Education.

I'm going to use the DIY furniture store MFI as an example since they no longer exist.

What if a single male MFI employee with a fab profile had face pics in his public gallery but with no text or photos linking him to MFI. This male is then becomes the face for MFI's tv commercial campaign as he is a damn good salesman and looks good on camera.

Is this male now sackable? I would argue yes since he may not have stated he worked for MFI or taken photographs of himself in uniform but he is recognisable due to the TV campaign. He can therefore cause embarrassment to MFI and bring the job into disrepute.

The moral here is that even if you don't identify your employers, you can still get sacked.

What if a teacher does not identify themselves in terms of their profession but a parent lodges a complaint?

Lock your profiles and careful who you accept as a friend of your private gallery has face pics

I'm not following here if someone plays in their private life without using their job or statues in anyway then hw does it affect their job.

Wouldn't this fall into the same category as being gay in the army as long as ure not shaging ur way through the platoon or letting it affect ur decisions at work then ur private life is ur own. And them disqualifying them would come under unfair dismissal.

The other option is, of course, to become so necessary to the company that you can't be replaced.

One of my partners (not the one linked on my profile, if you're being nosey) has a very, very good career working for large state funded organisations. He still puts face pictures here and on fetish sites. Why? There's very few people with his skillset. They can't get rid of him...

All this talk about bringing ones profession into disrepute, how is this the case when the majority of folk on here are doing nothing illegal? A couple (or single) meeting up with similar people for at worst, sex, is now considered so wrong? My take on it is those who consider it wrong or immoral are just shallow.

Yes I guess in that situation, that man would need to take down any public pictures that are recognisable as the 'face of MFI'. That situation is probably more realistic for actors employed in advertising campaigns, as opposed to the actually employees themselves. I'm sure if there are any professional actors on Fab who appear on television especially commercials, or celebrities, they would need to be very careful that their pictures are not obviously recognisable as pictures that may appear on TV and the press.

I dont think anyone has said that what anyone doing on fab. is illegal.

However employers expect their enployees to use discretion and common sense . Employers would not want their staff openly linking themselves to a swinging site. How many people would want either their families or close friends knowing they were members of this site . ?

Some of lifes activities are best kept private .

My nickname at work is "swingerman". That goes all the way up to the md...... I to,d them what I do on interview..... the answer was "top man". Two other employees joined the site later (both ladies). Neither are still with the company....but one is still on fab.

I'm not in a job where it would matter much either way but I have introduced one customer to the site (we were fb for a while....but I also introduced her to her now husband). I've also come across another customer on the site.

Different jobs need different levels of discretion I suppose.

"All this talk about bringing ones profession into disrepute, how is this the case when the majority of folk on here are doing nothing illegal? A couple (or single) meeting up with similar people for at worst, sex, is now considered so wrong? My take on it is those who consider it wrong or immoral are just shallow. "

pointing out what is the reality in some occupations is far from shallow, its simply how it is..

if that reality offends then so be it but trust me taking someone through a discipline process where their job was on the line for something similar to what the thread is about you get to see the stress and fear that wasn't necessary let alone what it does to relationships..

A number of proffessions fall under the requirement to follow a code of conduct, particularly those that are considered to be in a position of trust.

If you're percieved to not be following the ethos of the code of conduct, or compromising that position of trust, you can be fairly sure you'll be out of that profession.

I have a risk of disciplinary action (not that kind!) but I think it is an archaic view I would be inclined to invoke the company rules on diversity and inclusion. While swinging may not be a sexuality I think that multiple partners of all identifying genders and sexualities may pop us into the diversity and inclusion area.

I think that my management would run away from the whiff of being the named manager in a lost test case.

Mind you they could then try to get me on any other thing possible.

I work in health care and can't show my face on my public profile. Having said that, sex between coworkers is very very common where I work and I have a bit of a reputation at work which doesn't bother me one bit (and apparently coworker sex doesn't bother administration either as long as it's not sex on the premises). But I could lose my job if I became the poster girl for swinging.

That's the thing isn't it? The vast majority of employers couldn't give a damn about the employee's private lives. It's when they feel an employee's activities reflect poorly on them. It's a subtle difference.

One of my jobs, I had to sign a form in my employee contract stating that I can't (in a nutshell) badmouth or tarnish the image of the business on any social media or similar website. I work for a restaurant that is majority owned by a popular television chef, so I'm a little weary on showing my face on here. My other job is self employed so I wouldn't give a damn if it wasn't for my first.

We know of loads of work colleagues who are shagging their way through the company's we both work for to get themselves promoted , both male and female , .if threatened by company I would tell them to concentrate on the druggies or alchi, s as they could cause more problems than an employer who legally enjoys having sex with others , in private at home or at a legally run venue , while not wearing company uniform on company premises or on company time

I would just deny it. The pictures in our public galley are vague as to who they are. They could be us, but it can't be proven. My husband stumbled across a video on something like tumbler of a women giving a blowjob. He jokingly said 'I've got a bone to pick with you'. I had to do a double take. In fact I racked my brains as to whether it could have been me. She was identical to me down to her hair, eyes and facial expressions, and how I look when giving a blowjob. Her hands were different so I knew it wasn't me. She was in a car too and I know I've never done that in a car. The point is, if your boss says 'I found this picture of someone on a sex site and it looks like you', just say 'it looks like me, but it's not me - I've never been on a sex sure. Why were you on a sex site?'

Gill and I both worked in a large multi-national organisation. About 3 years ago she was informed that rumours had been circulating throughout the office that she was a regular attendee at local swingers club. The rumours became so strong that her job became intolerable and she consequently left.

We narrowed the source down to one guy who had "tried it on" with her and had been rejected.

I worked in a separate part of the organisation but when I got to know of it I "happened" to meet him in a quiet part of the company carpark one winters evening and asked him he had heard any of the rumours. I am 6ft 2ins and he is 5ft 6ins. Even from my height I could smell the fear. At least I think it was fear I could smell. He denied all knowledge but other people noticed he never commented on the rumour ever again.

We have taken the precaution of re-doing our profile with just a couple details changed.

We know that this does not address the legality of the position but sometimes straight forward confrontation can bring a swift resolution.

It shouldn't matter, but if it does, deny all knowledge. When they claim that they can see the profile, set up a spoof Facebook of your boss, post something fucking offensive, screen shot and present to them. That way you have just as much evidence of your bosses 'misconduct' as they do of yours.

"This happened to me when I was on the guys site.

A salutory tale, thanks!

But why do you have a face pic as your avatar after this experience?

With regards to the articles recently about the police, I thought the issue was that they were either discussing their job, wearing their uniform or doing it on work time. I know a policeman that was called in for professional conduct investigation due to his Fab use and sexual activities. And because he could prove that no pics of him in uniform had been shown, nor was he using his real name or face pic publicly, nor was he accessing Fab during work time, he was fine.

I'm the HR Director for a large Group of Companies, if anyone has trouble, PM me direct.

Get to know your social media policy

Do not make any link to work; I have mailed nurses on here to tell them to delete uniform pictures

Do not promote in the work environment

Discrimination legislation promotes values and beliefs; this arguably includes a belief that a relationship does not have to be 1-on-1, in our case where the girlfriend is seeking bi girls, any grief from the employer could be seen as sex discrimination.

If you have less than 2 years service it's easier to dismiss an employee; but there is no entitlement period for discrimination claims, so sex discrimination thrown at your HR dept will usually cause them to shit themselves and bottle it!

If anyone is having trouble, get in touch

This certainly got me thinking! Guess I have to pack in and go afterall there is no luck being here for me to loose my job which pays the bills.

On the more serious note it is legit for organisations to have a say in this especially if it is in their policies for character gratification!

The technology world has changed so much with the advent of smart phones where our lives rovolve round if you dont check and untick the synchronisation button with regards social media sites then one is in trouble because automatically the phone synchs pictures and most visited sites on your phone.

Have you realised even facebook automatically populates the sites you frequently visit be it online shopping or browsing? Same way it can populate fab as a page you frequently visit and even more scary is when you mistakenly press a button to share...SNAP!!

Whether they should do it is an open question, they most certainly CAN though.

The hypothetical boss in question will laugh at you and say 'go for it' if you threaten them like that.

Your example of your mail at home is invalid, it would be analagous to said boss reading your private email. A better analogy may be your boss coming round to see if you've got posters in the window. And why not? If you're working at a shale gas company and you've got anti-fracking posters adorning your property I can see why the employer may be somewhat concerned.

Many companies check the social media of candidates for new jobs too. In fact, assume they will when you apply for a job.

I would think that in most companies if the interviewer asked about your private life and whether or not you were a swinger , the interviewer would likely to be dismissed for gross misconduct if a formal complaint were to be made .

It is perfectly acceptable for companies to expect employees to adhere to certain codes ofconduct as employees are accepting the benefits being given by an employer .

I am at a loss to understand why any comoany would discuss such a topic at an interview , or for that matter why any interviewee would bring the topic up.

I interview people regularly for a small businness which I run and I would never dream of disscussing someones private life .

I truly don't understand how some people don't get the subtle difference either. Or the self employed.

If my plumber attends gang bangs, wears ladies underwear, couldn't give a monkeys. If on his Facebook page there were "shares" for example of a racist/sexist/homophobic etc nature, he wouldn't get my money!

"I work in health care and can't show my face on my public profile.

It's a subtle difference.

the simple fact that some are clearly not able to read and understand something as simple as this does make one wonder..

I got hired on the basis of being a sex-positive feminist and queer theorist by my main client. My client is ok with me having a sex life.

I'm self employed and got outted. To everyone. My 300+ clients included. Didn't lose a single one. Funnily enough, me enjoying wearing blindfolds and being tied up doesn't affect my ability to do my job. I got support from my clients and I think they valued the way I handled a horrible situation of having my trust completely violated.

In fairness, if I was in my previous job of working for an American corporation, I wouldn't have any face pics on display and would be as discrete as possible.

Mind you, I was discrete prior to my outting.

Well I don't bring my organisation into disrepute. They is no way our Fab page can be traced to where either of us work. I guess the worst that can happen is if someone from work attends the same party as us. If someone we know decides to blab, first of all they would have to know where we work, secondly they would have to prove it. With my husband's work he would probably ask them to investigate all the shagging that goes on after a work night out, and affairs that have taken place. That behaviour is far more likely to bring the company in direpute - I mean at a work do it's practically on the company's time. People outside the swing scene behave no better, if anything worse.

I cannot bring my organisation into disrepute if my organisation doesn't know I'm doing anything that they would judge to be disreputing them.

If anyone is ever in this sort of position, I'd urge them to contact Backlash, a charity helping and advising people with this type of thing.

And don't ever think it couldn't happen to you.

"I would just deny it. Why were you on a sex site?'"

True but if it's clearly your face on a public profile then you can't deny it. So I keep face pics for friends only so that legally it's private.
