I'm not a grammar snob nor perfect at English myself but has to be said the level of the written word on here has a lot to be desired.

Far too many abbreviations and lack of commas, full stops and capital letters...

Do you think we're all losing the will to spell and form sentences correctly or is it just the symptom of the texted word simplifying things?

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else

That last paragraph was intended to be irony, wasn't it?

Seriously though, I view the forums as a sort of pub conversation - mistakes happen, slang is expected, etc.

Messages and profiles however, are less transient and therefore can legitimately be held to a higher standard.

Unless there's a boob pic.

I don't care about spelling or punctuation. I can do it all correctly when I chose to, but there isn't a need to do that here ... some people come across as pedantic, detailed, rule bound and the sort who fold their clothes .... doesn't add up to a sense of fun for me. I use it as a filter: if you are so concerned about spelling and grammar, you are not for me

^^ This.

While perfect spelling and grammar may seem important to some it's quite trivial in the grand scheme of things.

I tend to get the curse of autocuntrect sometimes but I never proof read my post before I send it as my time is better spent.

if we could shove bbcode into text or html then i'd make more effort. slightly more though, like use italics and stuff like that coz i get told off for shouting when i capitalise stuff.

We should all understand that some people are simply no good at written English. They are therefore understandably defensive, as you see above, because it is a source of potential embarrassment to them as they appear unable to write gramatically correct English; even if they want to!

With a little effort the reader can however understand what they are saying when they substitute "no" for "know", "there" for "their" and "accept" for "except". Even spelling mistakes and txt spk can be fun, once you work out what the hell they meant to say.

So give them some slack guys; as they should give slack to those who find bad English irritating and frustrating.

Oh, by the way, the British Dyslexia Association estimate that 1 in 10 people have some form of dyslexia. So, unless there is a very high correlation between relaxed sexual morality and dyslexia, most bad spellers in the forum should not claim dyslexia as an excuse.

We all have filters to decide who we meet. A well written message that engages will always be responded to. That's how I ended up with my other half, the antithesis of what I was looking for.

However, I don't feel the need to pull people up on their spelling: why make people feel bad?

I used to check spelling, grammar and punctuation for a living, so I naturally tend to look for it (I miss mistakes in my own posts often though!).

I only think it matters when there's so many mistakes that profiles become hard to read. Mistakes are easily made when typing online.

If someone asks what's wrong with their profile, I think it's ok to point it out politely, accepting that many struggle with it and some are dyslexic (though having worked with and championed the "rights" of dyslexic people for 20 years, I'm sceptical about a few people claiming to have the condition, sadly).

Some people are bothered by it, some people aren't. I for one am, but ignore it if I see it, whether it's a forum post or message.

It doesn't matter who the man is, what he looks like if he messages me, " hey bbe wuu2 ur pics r gr8" then he's getting deleted! The amount of text talk I've had to google so I understand it, is truly shocking. I rarely used it when I was a teenager, so I'm not going to use it now.

So people are aware, there's a difference between text talk and someone being dyslexic.

Poor spelling/grammar/text language in the forums doesn't bother me, but if someone messages me with poorly spelt wording etc, especially on a first message where they are trying to get my attention, then I know they aren't for me.

I enjoy mental stimulation as well as great sex. If I have to decipher what they are saying to me, then it takes away the enjoyment.

I appreciate people have dyslexia, and I can tell the difference between dyslexia and bad/lazy spelling and grammar.

I took the OP's question to mean in a much broader sense of whether we can be bothered to construct proper sentences when a large proportion of us only ever communicate via a touch screen keyboard?

Is written English a dying art?

Does abbreviation of language lead to abbreviation of thought?

That might be a little too deep for this time of a morning.....

The problem is people read it from their context and make a comment as such. If it is vaguely on topic, then it's relevant. I haven't even red the posts, to be honest .... but this isn't a definition of trolling. That is something much more serious ....

The English language is very complex

We'll begin with box, and the plural is boxes;

But the plural of ox should be oxen, not oxes.

Then one fowl is goose, but two are called geese,

Yet the plural of moose should never be meese.

You may find a lone mouse or a nest full of mice,

Yet the plural of house is houses, not hice.

If the plural of man is always called men,

Why shouldn't the plural of pan be called pen?

The cow in the plural may be cows or kine,

But the plural of vow is vows, not vine.

I speak of my foot and show you my feet,

If I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet?

If one is a tooth, and a whole set are teeth,

Why shouldn't the plural of booth be called beeth?

If the singular is this and the plural is these,

Why shouldn't the plural of kiss be named kese?

Then one may be that, and three may be those,

Yet the plural of hat would never be hose;

We speak of a brother, and also of brethren,

But though we say mother, we never say methren.

The masculine pronouns are he, his and him,

But imagine the feminine she, shis, and shim!

So our English, I think, you all will agree,

Is the craziest language you ever did see.

I take it you already know

Of tough and bough and cough and dough?

Others may stumble, but not you,

On hiccough, thorough, slough, and through?

Well done! And now you wish, perhaps

To learn of less familiar traps?

Beware of heard, a dreadful word,

That looks like beard and sounds like bird.

And dead; it's said like bed, not bead;

For goodness sake, don't call it deed!

Watch out for meat and great and threat;

They rhyme with suite and straight and debt.

A moth is not a moth in mother,

Nor both in bother, broth in brother.

And here is not a match for there,

Or dear and fear for bear and pear.

And then there's dose and rose and lose,

Just look them up, and goose and choose.

And cork and work and card and ward,

And font and front and word and sword.

And do and go, then thwart and cart.

Come, come, I've hardly made a start.

A dreadful language? Why, man alive,

I'd learned to talk it when I was five,

And yet to write it, the more I tried,

I hadn't learned it at fifty-five!
