If you put the effort in to sell yourself then you might be more appealing and stand out from your competition.

Its only a waste of time if you let it be one. Write a decent profile, have a nice selection of pics and join in here, get noticed. Go to social events, be happy and positive, don't expect anything then you won't be disappointed. Do everything you possibly can to stand out, you get out what you put in as with everything in life.
