A fear of esculators

Ok so I was in a shopping centre in Preston Lancashire this morning when as I was getting to the top of one of the escalator thingies, I noticed an older lady looking proper petrified and not wanting to go down at all. He husband just seemed so oblivious and just crack on without a care in the world and left her to her complete fear...... But I could clearly see in her eyes that she was scared so I said hey luv there are some stairs over there would you like me to escort you to them...... Ooh yes please my luv she said if you don1t mind....... Now I never did ask her exactly why she was shit scarred of going down the escalator, I just took her to the steps, walked her down them and then helped her find her husband again who was now firmly eyes fixed in a shop window and seemed to still not have a care in the world..... As I made my way back up the same escalator again and watched them now disappear into the distance I thought to my self I wonder if this is a common thing in some people, or weather or not this lady had been through some form of trauma that had involved an escalator in the past??

If u have any type of visual issue then trying to step on and off an escalator can be terrifying... my partially sighted friend used to have to stop and ask people to help here if there were no stairs as she couldn't see the edges of the steps as they whizzed by. Esp down stairs.

What a lovely thing to do btw

Herts

I've known quite a few elderly people to have fallen down them and are now terrified of them.

If you have a visual impairment or struggle with balance they can be a nightmare.

I'm nervous stepping on them...and I most certainly cannot look behind me when going up one. I go all wobbly and feel like I'm falling.

I'm not as bad getting on to come down...but still can't look behind me

I tend to notice wee things and I often see people. Particularly females hesitate a little. And quite often young people aswell. Probably due to the crap your parents came out with to scare you into behaving. "If you mess about your hair will get caught"

My aunt is terrified of escalators and elevators and plenty of other things. If she has to visit someone on higher floors, she walks. Even if it's ten stories up. Or she will send someone else in with something she wants delivered to a higher floor. It can be difficult for her because she lives in NYC and most of the buildings are pretty tall.

It's kinda sad, actually, because there are tons of things that she misses out on. Whenever I ask her why she is afraid she says she can't explain it. She's been like that her whole life, too, so her age isn't the issue.
