How did the first members get verified?

We've had our first meet this weekend and went to the verification section to put something on for the other person. Unfortunately we can't do so until we are verified ourselves. So based on this, how did the first members ever get verified?

My Own Little World

The then site owners verified them by phone call. The site had a much smaller membership back then.

Cam? There used to be phone veri? Mods at a social? Trusted members and friends?

Not quite a chicken and egg philosophical question though
