I'm reading a few contradictory things. From what I can tell the younger generation tend not to find it offensive but older people do. That is a generalisation though.

I think it fair to say that some people will be offended and some won't. Perhaps if you know someone and use it to them or in front of them they won't bother. But people who don't know you and what your intention is when using it may easily be offended.

Either way, perhaps using it with strangers on the net is ill-advised.

Hi Guys.

It is my knowledge that Mallus are the common name to call girls who are from Kerala, Southern part of India. I never checked deeper meaning such as monkey or slut etc as you guys described because, it was very familiarised word we use. It was my curiosity to find one here. Sorry if I confused you.

Mallu means Monkey. Dear Keralites, People from outside our state often refer to us as “Mallus”. We also often refer to ourselves as “Mallus” thinking that it is a short form for 'Malayalee'. BUT please note that the meaning of the Hindi word “Mallu” as given in the Oxford Hindi English Dictionary is “MONKEY”.
