I've never been and as a young single lad I worry I'd find it harder going on my own then in a couple. What are people's thoughts?

Scared Shared is always easier. but have found that the attitude to singles is always helpful. out of kindness not necessarily that you in there.

Bite the bullet, what's the worst that could happen?

I was in the same boat as you, and bit the bullet last night going to Eureka's Cougars and Cubs event.

I threw myself in at the deep end. Most of the newbies scattered themselves around the outskirts of the room with a drink in hand and just waited for things to happen. I decided to just sit down with the nearest friendly looking folks and chatted to them. Once you do that, you're soon put at ease and the nervousness begins to subside

Seriously I would recommend going alone rather than with a friend, if you can pluck up the courage. It forces you to meet new people, who for the most part are very friendly and accommodating.
