They live under bridges and eat goats.

You shouldn't get them wet or feed them after midnight. Although I might be thinking of something else there.

Troll is a word that is thrown in here like a grenade, Trolls in the truest sense blight people's lives with truly horrid and offensive remarks that cause pain.

Here, it's if you disagree with someone

I was called one the other day. I laughed. I think they were joking. ...?

I think a lot of the time the word troll is used when you get people disagreeing with the wolves.

No, if you're not bothered by them they're not really trolls.

Trolls tend to be more vicious, know exactly what buttons to press to get a reaction, and are generally successful in being needlessly hurtful.

Also, they target the underprivileged, and those with less social power anyway.

So, e.g. saying "Immigrants are all just here to take our jobs and they are not doing their part to participate in the economy!" is a very troll thing to say.

But saying "Amazon and Vodafone need to pay their fucking taxes because they are not doing their part to participate in the economy!" wouldn't be.

Ok trolling covers a broad spectrum yes?

For instance you might get someone come onto the forums and make a blatantly racist sexiest or homophobic remark loosely veiled in the hope of sparking uproar and giving them a few hours entertainment...

Then there's the trolls tgat will befriend you over time lull you into a false sense of security find out things about you

Get pics and vids of you then suddenly turn nasty threaten you

Blackmail you into doing things and send said pics and vids to your family and friends via your friends list

"The wonder of social media"

Sound a bit far fetched?

I shit you not I've seen this happen on several occasions on the big blue book

Hence no face pics on pf etc

It happens it's something people should be made aware of and I've just put myself in the boringly sensible twat box ??????

Just stating facts and hopefully saving someone from grief...

A troll is also commonly known as a racist, homophobic, bigot ect, where a person who doesn't agree with the flavour of the month like,,ie,,that woman who made her feelings about Labours immigration policy known to Gordon Brown, because she dared to question his beliefs,,he called her a racist and a bigot on microphone,,when in fact,,nothing she had said could be construed as racist or bigot,,hence,,Gordon Brown is a troll.

A troll is a cave or bridge-dwelling creature with internet access who hides behind a number of fake identities, some of which they may have created from the stolen identities of people they have attacked if not fictitious characters that they can attempt to resemble; to separate their own identity from the characters they play.

Some sites have attack trolls run by management/admin. They may use them to discourage other trolls, or to troll members they don't want. They'll literally try to ruin the experience for you until you delete your account.

In attacking you, trolls may simply devote themselves to harassing you verbally or will clone your profile to threaten your offline identity/reputation. Otherwise they'll flag your content or slander you as a fake while maintaining that they are real.

If they work in groups they may also do what they can to try to discover your other online profiles and attack them all. This is known as doxing.

I've fought a few myself on a pretty big level.

"You're welcome, and to answer the original question, I don't beleive trolls do exist here. It's possible, but the community seems too tight knit for it to breed.

Well i have had loads of pm's from peeps asking me why someone as old, fat, bald and ugly as me is on the fab site, admin just generalising not quoting or abusing anyones human rights to confidentiality. Am i bothered lol."

That is so rude. Are these after you ok them, or random?

Okay that's awful behaviour and it's a shame you can't name these people for that, but I wouldn't call them trolls. Just garden variety cockwombles!

on the road to nowhere in particular

I was called a troll on a thread yesterday in jest (I hope)

There is a difference between having a passionate discussion and deliberately being provocative purely to cause disruption.

Saying you are against bare back sex and arguing vociferously is one thing. Saying everyone who par takes should be burned at the stake is another.

Following someone around from thread to thread and making negative remarks about everything they say is trolling.

Or just elevated harassment. Like I said, trolls may troll in the open but they either hide their true identity or don't purport to have one at all.

Some people have long memories on here. after a while, you begin to notice and wonder why ... there are definitely people who do this. Sadly I often have controversial opinions and I don't see myself as trying to say the right thing to please others, but when posters take offense, some follow me onto other threads. To be honest, though, I am on here in fits and starts, so it doesn't bother me, just a bit silly

There seem to be cliques here that jump on certain threads to trash them where the subject matter might seem naive or just a little low-brow and it was taken out of context.

Alas, chivalry is not dead, nor is the art of jousting though I'm not sure what they're using for lances here

So discuss anyway. Only mods can uphold forum law. If the cliquey eejits don't like it, hard luck.

It's worth pointing out - trolling is not the same as harassment. Trolling is the more light-hearted end of the spectrum whereas some of the more serious stuff stated above is quite clearly harassment.

Trolls are... an inconvenience. Harassment is illegal.

"Sycophant or troll? Which one are you? "

I think the great majority are neither.

It's one of those terms that has lost any true meaning through misuse...rather like "timewaster" and "genuine"

Trolls go above and beyond harassment. The real ones are the missing link to hackers. They'll literally hunt your identity down and use it to commit online crimes long after you've deleted and left.

One of the worst I saw was a profile of a junior school teacher who said where she worked and what her number and email was.

You could call them out on it and still admin wouldn't delete the profile. That's horrific.

Another friend of mine received attacks in the form of accusations of child abuse to his employer while trolls went to his facebook and slandered him to his friends.

Very luckily he didn't give a fuck, explained the mess and kept his job but the police wouldn't do anything about it.

Rushden

I don't post a lot on the forums anymore and probably haven't done so regularly for about three years. Like another poster has said, if I believe something, I will be forthright in my posts. Outspoken? Yep! Rude, generally no! I say generally because it would depend on the reply I received. I can give as good as I get.

It is not that trolls bother me, more that I realised that the three that seemed to always disagree with me, even on threads they posted agreement with my point of _iew, were ruining it for others. Not a lot of point in carrying on a discussion if they assume because they shout louder that they are right!

There have always been cliques on here, but only because it is online. If the same happened in the pub, it would just be a group of friends chatting and no one would bat an eyelid. You wouldn't walk into a pub and expect everyone to look up and say Hi, so why expect it online?

We did have a brush with a "Hardcore" troll. Threatened to expose out little hobby on social media, so I said to do it! The guy (we found out, worked at the same place as Mrs. R) posted pictures from here on a fake duplicate profile on Facebook and tried to friend all of my friends.

Didn't work! Mrs R was outed at work a few years ago and everyone we are friends with on there happen to "know" we have an odd lifestyle. But by doing that, he was trapped at work on the company PC posting to Facebook. Not allowed! They checked his history and he was sacked!

Not seen a troll on here for a while, but then again, I don't read the posts like I used to..
