Hey everyone im moving in jan to start basic training in the army can't wait gonna have to take a break from fab tho for 14 weeks

Done 13yrs in it biggest mistake was leaving,loved it.you will have plenty of guys to choose from and most of the females lol enjoy you will have a great time once you finish training.x

Have a thick skin. I did two years and it toughened me up no end but buggered my body.

When they shout 'dig in' during drill, don't. Knackers your joints.

Probably not a good idea to put it around your a swinger. You'll get heaps of misogyny thrown at you as it is. We had one girl who was charged with depleting the man power

They don't do humanitarian work etc at all do they!!

Don't worry about the press ups...it will be girlie ones on your knees (I think)

Just thought....might be a good idea to harden up your feet! Save all those painful blisters later.

I was advised soaking in surgical spirit, but the chaps on here might have better advice.

Don't forget all the shouting at, getting put on a charge and constant bollockings are to make you into a soldier! It's all a game, don't let it get to you.

A bit of a thick skin (as you need on here lol) goes a long way!x

In all honesty my best posting was attached to an engineer regiment in Germany, plenty of good times and drinking stories to go with them! Good luck and enjoy it for what it is

If you've already been issued your boots, wear them as much as possible before you start basic, so your feet are accustomed to them and they start moulding to your feet.

Bring only what you absolutely need with you to basic; less stuff to have squared away for the inevitable inspections.

Remember, your oppos will help you get through the bad times, so make sure you are as helpful as possible to them when you can be, to pay it forward.

All rsm are wanker

Don't fraternise

Don't let anyone try to take you under wing

Just in case you didn't understand don't fuck other squaddies

It will cause disharmony and discord and you will get known as a slut but not in a good way and you will soon be pushed out the army

I did ten years in the Royal Signals. Basic training is deliberately hard, my best advice is to try to see the funny side of everything. That gets you through the tough times and should make you quite popular too.

To the OP

1.Work on running with and without weight on your back using a backpack.

2.Work on upper body strength/pushup and pull ups

3.Work on having a strong mental mind, it its stronger than any muscle

4.Do not take any thing the staff/army personell say to you personally, they just doing their job.

5.Think of your family when you feel down and how proud you would make them when you succeed at a task.

6.Dont fratanise with other team mates (male or female) it brings too much dramas

7.Enjoy the good times and be proud of every achievement

A friend of mine was working as a civilian chef at Army Training Regiment Bassingbourn, which is where they actually filmed Full Metal Jacket, he asked a guy going through his phase 1 training how tall he was, and then said "I didn't know they piled shit that high" (a line from the film) and the guy started crying!

I totally agree with this - I did 26 years.

I'd also add, know your rights; the Army has changed a lot recently and is very forward thinking but there are still some 'fossils' out there and unfortunately they tend to lurk in training camps so whilst there's a degree of 'bullshit' that's necessary and will stand you in goodstead for when things get tough (and they will) there are other things that are quite simple illegal.

Finally, I've seen many woman lose their femininity and become just like the blokes - I get why this can happen but you can still be a woman and a bloody good squaddie! I knew a woman that beat most of the men at most things (even did the marines course) but she was still very much a woman.
