Stating on your profile that you are a professional (couple, guy, or woman). I was just curious what this is generally taken as meaning. Is it:

1. I have am not unemployed

2. I have a very serious job

3. I am good enough to "go-pro" so to speak, a real great swinger

Or

4. You quite honestly are a professional, otherwise called an escort?

I just thought it'd be interesting to hear peoples thoughts, no offence or anything intended. I use it to state I have a job and so am not home all day.

Im with you on this one, i live on a council estate, pay a mortgage, my own bills, work 50 hrs pw yet only an admin type worker, a lot of professional people think they are soooo above us lowly council dwellers as they dont see that some do actually work and bloody hard too, far more than they do when they are "working from home" yea right

Greykitten never put yourself down - you are not "just an admin worker", its a very worthwhile job and its not below any other job, its a different type of job. You are certainly now lowly if you live on a council estate. You have stated you work, you pay your way etc, that in my eyes makes you admirable - noone has any right to put you down for that.

as has been said, do not not put your self dwen, i do what is considerded a proffessional type job, yet i live on a council estate (with a mortgage) , a couple of the staff that work with me in admin support at the same company also live on the estate but rent.

i could not do my job without the admin support i get from them, none of us look up or down to each other, we all grew up on the same estate, we all work as hard as each other.

no one has the right to look down on another human as an inequal

Put my hands up to the 'working from home'. On those days not a lot of real work gets done. Mind, if I think about it, not much more gets done when I'm in the office. Don't tell the boss!

Reading that someone is a so called 'professional' on that persons profile does not impress us in the least bit and certainly doesn't make us want to meet them based on that alone.

Truth is we really don't care what anyone does as long as we all get on.

As I have repeatedly said before, I can verify photos for passport and driving licence applications if I have known someone 2 years or more.

If that makes me a snob or far to up my own arse, then so be it, and peeps who think that way should refrain from contacting me! Your loss, not mine!

This thread's a bit like the thread about people who cite their work as a reason for needing discretion.

We're all different, and we all have different reasons for the things we say. it doesn't make us good or bad people. We're all going to make judgements - about who we want to sleep with, or stay awake with, or put over our knee and...

Sorry, I wandered off there

All I mean is, the fact that I'm very fussy about people I have sex with having a pulse and being awake doesn't mean I'm prejudiced against the dead and the narcoleptic...

haha made me laugh but i think that just about sums it up

i was talking to a couple once many years ago, i was working in a care home at the time, we had spoken on the phone, on msn and was arranging a meet when the woman asked what i did for a living so i told them i worked in a care home, they seemed quite impressed at meeting a nurse till i said no im just a care worker, everything went dead and she came back with, in that case your not really for us as we like people we can hold a conversation with lol

so now to be honest, tho its not because im a snob, but i do meet people who can at least pay their own way, because tho work im a single mum so i cant really afford to foot the bill on every meet i have

Whoa!!! This old chestnut...again!!!

It never fails to amaze me the inverted snobbery this thread always throws up. What is it with some of you?!! Are you really so bereft of things to worry your sorry lives that you feel the necessity to nit pick other peoples profiles where they state what THEY are and what THEY are looking for?!! How does that affect you?!! How does that make them up their own arse?!!

If I see someone has no blacks, no BBWs etc on their profile, guess what people that is THEIR choice. I'm not going to start a thread moaning about people having a preference that excludes me!!!

If you're a Rhodes Scholar you're hardly going to have anything in common with a high school drop out with an IQ lower than their age no matter how sexy they may appear. Swinging is more about just shagging for some of us, and being with people we feel comfortable with, regardless of whether it's looks, education, profession etc, it's just another identifer to finding like minded people.

If you live in a council house and work on the bins why would you feel that someone who's a doctor and puts "professional" on their profile is looking down on you and up their own arse?!!

Some of you really, do need to get over yourselves. Jealousy and inadequacy is a VERY ugly trait!!!

Sassy, solicitor, sitting in her detached house in a salubrious part of the the nations capital, sipping Blue Mountain coffee and !!!

Here's a point though, what qualifications makes someone a professional? I have a Business Administration NVQIII, does that count or are we only talking those that are doctors, nurses, mechanics maybe?

On another point, no im not saying anything nasty about anyone above me but its common for those more affluent to constantly demean those of us that live on council estates, i happen to like where i live, i moved from the estate many years ago when the council gave me a house but it was such an awful place and i suffered daily abuse, that when the house i live in now came up at a price i could afford, i bought it to me its my home.

I am normally polite and pleasant, however, I have been known to let my claws up if I am rubbed the wrong way.

I am a professional, and would always defend those who choose to call themselves professionals who are being ridiculed by others through no fault of their own except to have professional qualifications.

I have no axe to grind with anyone.

However, I will stand up and be counted if I feel the need to do so, like when a subject matter close to my heart is being discussed, and that some of the comments are not justified, not to mention downright rude and biased.

I don't think it is solely down to qualifications.. it is also about pride, self respect... wanting to do everything to the best of ones ability.

Taking ownership of your life, working hard..working smart.

I have done all of the above. I have been very successful in my career, have a very nice home/s, have very nice things..

and I have opened that home to many people from here... and not once asked what they do, where they live.

but I consider myself a professional.

i dont think people are up their own arses JUST based on what job they do, ive met people of all trade, coppers, paramedics etc who have been nice down to earth guys

however i do think people who judge you and if they will meet you based on what job you do are slighty up their arses

why are they any better than me just because they dont think my job qualifies me good enough to meet them?

sorry but thats just my opinion

? I'm replying to the part about it being common for the affluent to demean the lower classes - I think its possibly more common the other way around (more so because the majority of us do live in council estates) needlessly hating someone because they're rich or speak with a posh accent or something.

I must be thick...being disingenuous here as I know I'm not...but I do struggle, I really do, to understand how someone putting on their profile that they are professional correlates to them looking down on others or thinking they are better than them.

Personally, I find profiles that state "we are a very good looking, sexy and hot couple and only want to play with people who are equally as hot as us" more worthy of scathing remarks.

But then again, it's people's preference in wanting to play with people they are comfortable with.

I can't believe I'm getting annoyed over this thread. Something a little stronger than Blue Mountain needed I think!!!

"Im sorry but I don't agree with anyone that thinks people are up their own arses on here when they don't even know them

Im a professional too,I don't say so on my profile as there is no need for me to,but I also don't make assumptions about anyone before Ive spoken to them and decide that they're actually a likable human first and foremost

i dont think people are up their own arses JUST based on what job they do, ive met people of all trade, coppers, paramedics etc who have been nice down to earth guys

however i do think people who judge you and if they will meet you based on what job you do are slighty up their arses

why are they any better than me just because they dont think my job qualifies me good enough to meet them?

sorry but thats just my opinion "

Don't have to say sorry naughty lol,I don't believe anyone has the right to judge anyone else based on their job, income, education or where they live,I don't like that people make assumptions that professional people are up their own arses,I don't assume that everyone that is'nt a professional is beneath me because that would be a complete load of untrue bollocks

I think people that judge others are going to be that way whether they're millionaires or penniless, its in their personality regardless

"Here's a point though, what qualifications makes someone a professional? I have a Business Administration NVQIII, does that count or are we only talking those that are doctors, nurses, mechanics maybe?

On another point, no im not saying anything nasty about anyone above me but its common for those more affluent to constantly demean those of us that live on council estates, i happen to like where i live, i moved from the estate many years ago when the council gave me a house but it was such an awful place and i suffered daily abuse, that when the house i live in now came up at a price i could afford, i bought it to me its my home.

Fair play to you for being happy - I see a lot of reverse snobbery too though - people needlessly hating people who they are convinced think they're 'better' than them or because they have qualifications, wealth or a good job.

Who is hating who in my comment?

At no point in my comments have i said that i hated those above me or professional, you are generalising and i dont appreciate it at all, im very happy with my life, ive no desire for it to be changed even if some might think its not all that. And for the record, it is those affluent that demean council dwellers, thats all i ever see in the local papers, that council tenants are all drug dealing scum that live on benefits as they cant be bothered to work. In fact those comments are also towards anyone that lives in social housing, i should know i work for a housing association and the homeowners always blame our tenants for anything, including leaving their dustbin at the front of the house with the comment "it looks sooo unsightly"!!

If people have said they are here to meet only professionals, then I can see why that would come across as snobby.

But I wouldn't say just describing yourself as professional was snobby. I'm sure there are some numpties out there who will turn their noses up at the jobs other people do or the areas they live in etc But I can't imagine most people who write it are sat there thinking "and all those who aren't are not worthy of meeting me," perhaps I'm being naive?

West

Its the scourge of this country...and probably a few others to...the 'class thing'..

Upper/upper middle/middle/upper lower/lower..or the Jeremy Kyle brigade!

For gods sake..you either work or you dont...values?..bollocks!...I used to be in a social circle of some very rich and 'gentrified people..oh yes they had so values..they would stitch each other up at the drop of a hat..snort , carry on with their friends parters behind their backs...go shop lifting purely for the 'wheeze' etc...

But..according to them they were 'middle class'

The area I come from was built by people who had fuck all...but they dont touch drugs, certainly dont steal and messing with your mates mrs would earn you a much deserved 'slap'..and wife swapping back would be right off the radar!!,,as it was once considered a 'middle class' thing for people in the suburbs

The fact that some people only eat organic tofo, burn joss stick and sit in deep appreciation of Leonard Cohen doesnt make them any different from people who eat chips like chas an dave and earn their money the hard way

Values?...effin values??????

Maybe people who see themselves as middle class are trying to put themselves on a pedestal above others?...

Maybe people who consider themselves as 'just ordinary working class' have a complex of inferiority?

People like my Dad...who would say 'the rich, managers, bosses etc dont want to know people like us..cos we are working class'...he was ashamed of himself, but it came out as a resentment of those 'better' than him

He would tell me 'people like us dont do that sort of work...we are working class...we dig the roads, build houses, sweep streets'...and for a while it rubbed off

If he could only see me now...

Oh..and what do people actually mean when they say 'professional'?...my neighbour considered himself a professional lorry driver..cos that what he does for a living...

Other people we know say they are 'professional' as they have an import/export business (selling Amway!)

Its probably similar to the words 'celebrity' these days...very overplayed

As I understand the word 'professional' is someone who has worked long and hard throughout a degree course in their chosen career for many years and can sign pictures for passports.

The "professions" are limited and just because someone is employed, doesn't make them professional! We have never had any problems with snobbery from genuine professional people, in fact they rarely mention it at all. We have had snobbery from people who just call themselves professional and are not!

One couple who were on here until he found out that she was cheating, called themselves professional and made a big thing of it! He was a warehouse shift manager, certainly not a certified profession. They had it on the profile so they would get a "better sort of meet"!

In our _iew, it is not those who have genuinely put professional on their profiles who are snobs, but those who are not and put it on anyway!

Having said that, we don't understand why anyone would put it on a profile here anyway! It is not relevant to what we are all here for. We won't put it on ours because we think it may put some people off because they may think we are snobs!

Just read through this and i don't know if others have picked up but there seems to be an undercurrent jealousy of what some see as professionals. Just because someone has an education don't make them a time waster or up their own arse. Also just because someone has a professional status it dosn't mean they are rolling in lucre so its no reason to be envious.

So lets get the professional thing in context. People use it as a term of standards mainly. Ie i am a professional as in i am clean, well groomed, my house is to a certain standard i am polite and well mannered. Ok they may not be and they may be arrogant but that is the individual not their working status.

I think granny had point saying that she worked hard for her qualifications as did many others. Equally why knock someone who digs holes! FFS they are the people who have worked all hours in freezing conditions to mend broken pipes.

In reality we need both types of worker. Sorry but i find this sort of shit inherently infuriating. As many may know i served in the gulf and without solders and the officers and professional back room staff we would have been fucked.

So can we please get of our social horses and give a little respect to all because frankly without everyone the country wouldn't tick properly.

In response to the opening thread,... we did have professional on it because...

1. we are not unemployed

2. we both have serious jobs

3. we are good enough to go pro - well we both think each other is

4. we are not an escort

We have taken it off because we are often abroad and therefore not fully employed all the year round.

and take no offence apart from the poster below the opening one - we are not up our own arses. Mind you it would take one to know one that was up their own arse wouldnt it?

Just to throw something else in there... I'm surrounded by professionals all day every day and they may well be academically clever but there's not an ounce of common sense between then.

I have no bones to pick with anyone, as I said earlier, what people do for a living really doesn't make any odds to me. It certainly isn't something that I would ask prior to a meet. If it comes up in conversation then it comes up in conversation.

Perhaps I'm hypocritical, and I know that I'm a bit of a snob in that I'd like potential playmates to be a little bit smart but you don't need a degree to be smart. There are all types of smart. There's nothing more off-putting than a chip on a shoulder though, regardless of who the shoulder belongs to.

What's written on paper, much like verifications, are merely that, a piece of paper. Hats off to those who have worked hard. Hats off to those who have come from nothing. Hats off to those who have a random job doing something they love (I sure as hell would like to be in that position) but in the grand old scheme of things, you don't require to be qualified to have sex and forgive me if I'm mistaken, but that's why we're mostly here isn't it?

So if you're thick as shit, then I'm sorry about that, but hopefully you'll meet your match and find someone to fuck.

If you're a smarty pants then good for you, hopefully you'll meet someone who matches your intellect and keeps you happy in the sack.

Me... I'll hope that some cheeky fucker has enough balls to make me laugh and fuck me into next week.

"Just to throw something else in there...

"

It'll need to be a hard, fast fuck.

I agree with the comment that just because someone has a degree or a few letters after his/her name, does not mean he/she has common sense!

I am not clever, however, I would like to believe I have a few brain cells somewhere, and the good sense to know when to say something and when to shut up.

I know I am not always right, however, I would like to believe I am seldom wrong.

Despite all that has previously been said on this thread, the fact is that there are probably as many, if not more, professionals who don't state it on their profiles than do.

What the O.P was asking was why some feel the need to add it?

Is it just something to rank alongside, "Good standard of living", "Good looking", "Hot", "Sexy", etc ?

Only a very few "professionals" have actually said why they feel the need to state it on their profiles......which was the original question.

Probably as many reasons as their are professionals. It's more surprising to me that people TROLL through others profiles and spend time mulling over it and then post about it.

As I understand the word 'professional' is someone who has worked long and hard throughout a degree course in their chosen career for many years and can sign pictures for passports.

I may be wrong, that's just my understanding of the word.

Another definition of the P word is, someone who belongs to a regulatory body concerning their chosen career, thereby assuring one of their requirement to adhere to a strict code of practice.

i.e chartered accountant, architect etc.

So is mine actually.

Wow I genuinely wouldn't have had half of them as professional, I thought it was people with degrees, like doctors etc. Cool, I used to be a professional pmsl but now I'm a lowly shop worker :- Maybe I'll put ex professional on my profile and see if it makes any difference

On the same note, coz I'm an ex professional that means I can tell those who insist I am, that I'm no longer up my own arse! woo hoo, this has been an enlightening morning

You know, I don't know WHY we state the professional bit.

Erm.

I suppose it's a polite way of saying erm... I dunno. Hmm. I think we use it as a foil to our nature which is exceptionally relaxed.

But really, good question.

Newcastle

i am not really that keen on the tag 'professional' but sometimes use it because i have the sort of job that involves meeting loads of new people all of the time and not really wanting to knock on the door of someone's home where there may be a connection...i don't mind or care what background people are that i meet, but want to know [not unreasonably, in my _iew] that i am not going to cause any difficulties for myself or others.

i would not knowingly discount meeting anyone because of their background. never.

so, to me, it is not about 'the job', or any sense feeling of a 'higher standing' in society, it is more about preserving discretion and trying to make it as clear as possible that i need to remain discrete because of my job.

so, saying 'have to be discrete because of my job' is completely fine as far as i can see, and will play a part in whether i send people pics or not. i feel i should be able to do this without anyone replying ''who are you then, the prime minister?', which did happen once...

i am no better than anyone else, but no worse either, and that means my careful approach should be respected.

nice discussion though, and we should all have a think about what this is all about now and again...

cheers all

tony

I think we will all try to socialise and even play within our own social groups and that there is always those that will use the "Professional" title to impress, however those that want to put it on their profile should be allowed to, I wont as im far too good for that.

I personally don't care one way or the other what a person does for a living or how much money they do or don't have - it all means exactly nothing to me. I like to think that I take people for WHO (as in the whole person)they are, not WHAT they are (as in defined by their job).

Hubby and I are classed as professionals because we hold pub licenses. There was no two people more surprised than us when we discovered that this meant we now had the special privilege of being able to verify peoples identity for passports!

In fact we often take the piss out of ourselves 'we're professionals, don't you know' because we find it amusing that we have been 'elevated' to professional status because we sat a load of exams and had a police check in order to get licensed. Yes it means we're required to know the law a little more than the next person but its a nonsense imo to say we are professional people because of that. Whenever I see the word professional I think the term refers to white collar workers such as doctors, teachers and the like. Not saying thats the right interpretation, but its my interpretation.

Where's the correlation between someone putting professional on THEIR profile and them claiming to be better than anyone else?!!

Would you assume those that have "attractive" on their profile thought those without are munters? Anyone without "slim" on their profile a tub of lard? I could go on!

I struggle to understand why people take umbridge with our other members choose to describe themselves on their profile!

Maybe this has been said before, as this is a pretty long thread, but I have yet to see a profile that says 'professional, so no lower class, council house type vermin need apply'

So why the snide comments if people state what they are on their profile?

whilst I agree with the above sentiment i think that what we're looking at is from the "class system" point of _iew..ie lower/junior ranks relationship with more senior ranks..frowned up on not allowed!

if you select prof more than likely you wont have a face pic on your profile front page (in private pics) and you are looking for people with a 'similar life style' not the swinging one...

there is also the 'fear' that by putting your picky up you may be identified and black mailed caus your a judge, doctor, police etc etc including fashion police! lol and as a recent case showed doctors cannot have relationships with their patients..

nothing to do with good looking or munters as it was put; just with groups of peeps you may think you would have more in common with..

snobbish really but then snobs are found in every level of society...i like to think I'm open minded and will talk to everyone...unless they're wearing Burberry check!

left self open there!

You've just repeated what I've said!

A "very attractive, slim" person wouldn't "class" a plain, fat person in their league, and many such profiles state that. I find those profiles more snobbish than any with "professional" on it.

I've NEVER seen a "professional" profile stating only seeking people in upper tax bracket!

As I said, inverted snobbery: nothing to be done about other people's insecurities!

Because describing yourself as curvy, fun, slim, outgoing, attractive, shy, "fabulous" are all how you see yourself personally an. To me, "Professional" is a work-related term. I think most people come here to play and get away from regular norms. I'm not insecure/jealous/petty/sad, I just don't see the relevance. Who are we trying to impress? Someone we like to meet or a potential employer?

Not trying to be (see above ), I just think there are better ways of describing yourself.

YOU may think there are better ways of describing yourself, and I'd agree with you, but I don't see how others see fit to describe themselves as a negative, or any of my business.

It makes them feel good about themselves, just like the soilders, fireman, policeman etc on here that put their professions down.

It's a selling point, the same way as "slim, attractive" is for some.

As I said, nothing to be done about other people's insecurities or desire to control how others see fit to describe themselves on their OWN profiles!

Let's face it... if you are too thick to understand the context in which the word 'professional' is used on a profile... you're probably not the type professional folk would want to meet. So I wouldn't worry about it too much and just move along to the next profile.

Surely we need categories of professional? Some people may find some professionals just not quite professional enough for their liking.

I thought the 'professions' were things like doctors, lawyers and accountants.

I wouldn't say people who just have a decent job and wear a suit all day are professionals. You're just 'employed'.
