Can anyone go and watch a case in the court? Or is only the jury and people involved allowed to be in the court?

Yes - courts have to be open to the public so that Justice can be seen to be done.

Only in exceptional cases will the Judge clear the court and hear the case privately "In Camera".

Well worth going to see how it happens - it's also equally revealing of society to just pop along and sit in your local Magistrate's court...

It's not as exciting as it sounds I ended up wandering into a fraud case after staying behind after giving evidence.

I used to spend every Thursday & Friday in Crown Court - it's really not exciting.

Every Crown Courtroom has a public gallery. You cannot make notes & there is normally cctv too.

Most big trials start on a Monday

I've been with work a few times. It can be very interesting on occasion.

I saw two things of particular interest:

a chap with pre-existing points on his licence in danger of losing his driving licence after one of his sons borrowed his car and was caught by a speed camera. Both of his sons blamed the other and so he was left to carry the can. I rather suspect that Christmas presents were cancelled all round that year.

And:

My mother in law being named as a witness to an assault. As she had shopped a bad hat confidentially, she was most put out by this when I phoned her to let her know....

You can go into any criminal court in session unless it it a hearing "in camera" (closed session).

You cannot film record or use electronic devices. Phones should be switched off or put on silent.

I've worked with a few Barristers in my time and I'm fed up of Crown Courts. Every time I go to one there's someone I know well on trial and it makes the whole situation pretty embarrassing. School mates, old GF's, people you used to work with. Enough!

Members of the public sat in the public gallery of a Crown Court cannot take notes.

That doesn't seem to be correct.

"Freedom of Information Act.

The court was directed to page 22, "Note taking in the public gallery of criminal courts".

It says: "It is accepted that justice is administered in open court where anyone present may listen to and report what is said. There can be no objection to note taking in the public gallery unless it is for an improper purpose; for example, to brief a witness who is not in court on what has already happened. This may occur where witnesses who have yet to give evidence are usually kept out of court and in civil cases in which the judge has directed that a future witness should be out of court while other evidence is given, or the hearing is in chambers.

I'm not going to argue with you or the FOI Act. Just go sit in a public gallery & start taking notes without the Judge's permission.
