Perhaps those people are more comfortable speaking in their native tongue. It's hardly worthy of a rant.

"was not a rant "

Ok it's not a rant but I wouldn't call it rude either. People communicating in their own language is no big deal. There's probably a very good reason for it, they can't write in English very well and fear the grammar/spelling nazis maybe?

Yes you should, but if you don't for a couple of minutes on a chat, is It fair to stigmatise someone for it?

I am sure some people do It because their English is not good enough. I did It a couple of days ago (I am French) because the lady was French and my flirting skills are a lot better in French than they are in English.

I didn't mean to be rude over it nor did I got abuse as It was litterally a few minutes of exchange not preventing me on the young lady to answer to what was on the wall.

I really don't think it is rude and think people who do have somehow a start of a problem with foreigners (not saying I am right, just my theory)

I think it adds a nice air when people use a different language. As long as no rules are broken it makes no odds.

What if someone is more comfortable in speaking another language cause their English isn't so good and if you can translate it and its not offensive to you what's the problem?

If you couldn't understand them you wouldn't know they were taking the piss out of you, so does it really matter. Seems a case of mild paranoia if you think everyone taking in a foreign language is talking about you.

Speaking of languages all the countries I've travelled to either English is their second or third language they speak including for example Morocco Arabic English and French etc.

I speak four different languages although I consider English my first language as born and breed in North East why do English people have problems with other languages when most countries all of Europe speak English. To be honest they struggle with French and Spanish when in France or Spain makes me laugh. A lot of uneducated people can't even speak English let alone try other foreign languages haha hope I haven't upset you too much and thrown a spanner in the works

Couldn't of said it better myself! ????????

Someone needs to be more accepting of equality and diversity!

English are very lazy because every other country wants to learn English we think we shouldn't be accepting of others speaking their native language in our country!

There are users from all over the world and have no problem with others talking their own language even if was to take the piss out of me because if didn't speak or read that language how would I know what they were saying why would it bother me?

Wouldn't be bothered to be quite frank, I'd explain why I didn't understand as I don't speak that language and get on with my day. Not everyone speaks English and so what?? Diversity is amazing and I could listen to others talk in different languages all day. If they're not talking to you then their conversation doesn't concern yourself so to ask them to talk in a language you can understand is pretty rude tbh

It doesn't have to be did respectful. If It is at a lot dosage and not for a long Time, I don't see the issue. I am sure there could be then a private message intended like there could be for a conversation in English.

The real question is: did It ever happen to you while chatting? And why didnt you say look guys, please try to converse in English if you don't mind.

I am sure everyone would do it if asked nicely or more to another room to carry on their flirting or whatever conversation is.

yh ignorant on your part , first of all they werent talking to you so whats the point stropping over that, secondly its their mouth and their choice of what they speak same as its your choice to speak any language you want.

Theres no universal law stating everyone should speak english in a chatroom. Which raises the question, whats your point really ?

Are there rules about it in the chat rooms?

If so, mods need enforce them.

If not, maybe the site needs more rooms to cater to people who would prefer to converse in other languages.

Now thats quite funny. My experience of British people overseas is that the majority of them never bother to learn the local language and expect the locals to speak and understand English.

I think I'm more accepting because my parents were immigrants and they got so much stick for talking their own language over here when they first landed on these shores...they were only young and were forced to move because of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus so they had to hit the ground running....

Communication is communication no matter what language it's in. I come from a family of polish immigrants (displaced people to be precis) and have no problem if people want to speak different languages on here or anywhere else. Using Google translate is hardly a chore if you're interested in knowing what other people are saying, although it's not entirely accurate (for example, the phrase 'Rozjasnic jaskier' that I posted earlier means lighten up buttercup, Google translates it as brighten up buttercup).

I've exactly this from an older woman I worked with. We work in a tourist hotspot, people from all over the world visit. Some speak English well, some a bit, some not at all. When they are speaking amongst themselves why shouldn't they speak their own language, it doesn't concern me in the slightest. Anyone who has to know what everyone else is saying, and if they can't understand suspect they may be being talked about is showing signs of paranoia in my opinion.

I would find it quite respectful for you to not brutally fucking massacre the English language, but you're doing a bloody good job of it.

Racist. The word you're looking for is racist. A racialist is someone who believes that humans are naturally divided into different racists. Which is not the same as a racist.

Our country has always been traditionally multicultural. It's a joy to walk down the street and hear different languages. Since we started going out and forming our Empire we have always welcomed different cultures and languages into our country. Why have you suddenly gone against those values?

How British does one have to be in order to comment?

Is a British passport required? Perhaps you had to be born in this country? Maybe 72 generations of your family had to live here before you're allowed to speak?

Considering we're largely a nation of 'foreigners' - otherwise known as settlers - this comment is bizarre.

It's a free country and if others wish to comment they can. It's part of the British heritage British people can be proud of is that British people died to protect that right for others in different countries.

What is the unmentionable? I know you mentioned it, but I missed it ... sorry. I am dipping in and out of various postings plus messaging ... can't quite follow the thread of this one.

Are you now referring to those who choose to speak a language other than English as 'the unmentionables'?
