I've booked a checkup at my gp on Wednesday, I've never been tested before and wondered what to expect. I go down on ladies and am usually gloved up before sex, but I'm still a bit nervous

Some really helpful information had been posted about this recently in the advice section. You can search there for it.

Just be honest about your sexual history. They won't judge you and will be able to give you all the help and advice you need.

Tell them your activities

Expect a blood test

Swabs

Don't forget to get your free condoms

They asked me about my sexual history, never once judged me for anything I told them. Then asked if I'd noticed anything that had made me come in or jut fancied a check up. General chat about things.

A quick look at the equipment, swab from penis hole (no idea what else to call it, not painful just a second of discomfort), blood test and all done.

Best advice is be honest and open about the activities you do - at way they know what to check for. Blood test - not painful. Swabs - likewise. Examination - fleeting in my experience. Ask for throat swabs if they do not offer them.

Thank you for the advice, and yes Courtney, I remember seeing it now you mentioned, but I didn't think of checking before opening a new thread also, as much as free condoms sounds appealing, I'd prefer to buy them. I've tried several different brands and sizes to get some I like, so I'll stick with those.

to the throat swab. They don't always suggest it, even with us girls. I have on several occasions had to request one.

And if you haven't had them before ask for Hep B vaccination. You have to have three injections spread out over three months but well worth it. Chances are if you are open about swinging with them they will offer it you anyway. Our local clinic were intrigued by it all and wanted to ask loads of questions that they had never been able to ask anyone before. You will be fine don't worry.

That's useful to know. I hate needles and feel like vomiting as a result of remembering a few bad experiences donating platelets, but it's nice to be prepared lol

I wouldn't go to your gp, they often don't have the specialised up to date knowledge that your local gum clinic will have...and they give out free condoms

I'm a bit concerned you're having your first check at 26. I go at least twice a year and have done since I became sexually active as a teenager.

Try to go regularly in future. Just using a condom doesn't equal risk free sex.

Yes, it's overdue, however, I was not sexually active until I was 22, with the exception of losing my virginity at 17, and we used protection, and until I first visited a club a month or two ago, I had only ever been with 3 women, so I allowed my insecurity about discussing such topics with anyone at all to get the better of me many times, but now it's more to ensure that I'm not passing anything on, it's vital to get checked, even though I'm pretty sure I don't have anything

^^ This.

Most GP's don't offer sexual health testing unless you have a reason to suspect you actually have an illness.

GUM clinics are better, and they are more equipped to understand your lifestyle.

Statistically, You will be riddled with horrible diseases like colds, influenza, mrsa, C difficile, noroviruse, stomach bugs, heart disease, potential stroke, lung cancer, pneumonia, liver disease, arthritis and prostate cancer; all very common aflictions and none of which are prevented by a condom. So cheer up, the non-sexual diseases will get you long before the STIs.

Cool, I'll check out gum clinics on the way home tonight and if the gp doesn't provide the services necessary, I'll give them a go

cool, so, my GP just outright recommended GUM because the surgery doesn't provide some of the services which I may require after asking if I was bi, which, I'm only just coming to terms with and haven't exactly done much about. A bit nervous because (just my luck) an observer was in the room while discussing it. So I'm hoping to go to a relatively close clinic in the morning as I rang up, and that's when they suggested I go as a walk-in. Many thanks for the good advice people

Walked into my local GUM clinic, well not the most local as know a few NHS staff in that hositpal, and who do I see chatting to the receptionist working there. My next door neighbour, forgot she was a nurse and had told me she was doing a placement there

Well, at least she knows you get tested. Hopefully she's not the gossipy type

If you are tested for anything at your GP , sexual health related or otherwise it goes on your medical history. when tested at the GUM nothing goes on your general medical history it is kept separate

That's interesting to know, however, I'd prefer it on my records because then, in the event of an emergency where I cannot inform of any history (or cannot remember) the DR's can check

We would suggest you got checked at a GUM clinic rather than your GP.

A GUM clinic is more likely to know what infections are in the area and offer full checks rather than simply a blood test etc.

You are also likely to be offered a Hep jab as well if you have not been vaccinated.

Just a thought

With where you are there are several local to you. The one at kingsmill is really good and there is also one on London road in Derby that's good.

Its also worth asking at the attic as they have the clinic visit there too.

There are smaller ones locally but I find they are not as good and struggle to get them to do the throat swabs.

If you get a serious disease that will affect your medical treatment you should go to your doctor anyway. So that wouldn't matter.

Still better off going to a GUM clinic.

There you have the choice of them contacting your GP or keeping the information private.

However as I mentioned before (which for some strange reason has slipped down the postings) the GUM clinic can give you a more thorough check-up and they know more about the incidence of STIs in the area etc.

It is the same as visiting a GP or an emergency hospital when you are having a possible heart attack the specialists give more informed care.

Yes, the gum clinic was good.Very thorough, and for some reason the nurses thought I was sweet... Obviously don't know me too well I think my previous post was misinterpreted though, I would prefer my medical information all in one place, not necessarily that I'd go to my gp as a preference, especially as their services aren't as broad as the gum clinic. Got my first immunisation jab for hepatitis btw. Hate injections since a few bad experiences a few years ago. Oh well, three more to go

The reason I go to GUM rather than GP for sexual health is if in future you require medical for health insurance ,, the fact that you have had sexual health tests and is on your general medical history affects your policy . If you are tested positive for anything then it is your decision whether GP is told or not
