There are risks. But they are much lower than with sex. I personally use condoms with men I have just met, though I do give oral to men I have met regularly without them. I haven't had a problem. But I think most people don't use condoms and are fine as well. It is up to you really. You can do a bit of research on it if you are really worried. That is what I did.

I'm not sure. I (f)don't enjoy receiving oral but if I did I would use dental dams because there is an obvious exchange of body fluids. I think everyone should protect themselves as they see fit.

It isn't that interesting. Given the much lower chances of contracting an STI from oral, I think it is understandable that many choose to mitigate penetrative sex more than oral. And that is coming from someone who does often choose to use condoms for oral.

its a shame so many clinics are closing for discrete checks too... I now travel from Wales into England for regular checks as here in Wales we have very few sexual health clinic. .. its more worrying to me that people just won't be regularly screened so that gives everyone more risk.

Oral has very low risk of contracting an std (obviously there's always that chance).

If you're that worried, use one of those ultra thin condoms. That way you're both protected and there's not much loss in sensation.

But that's my point. You can't just say "a chance is a chance, a risk is a risk." It isn't. There are things that have more or less risk. Oral has less risk then penetration. That is why some insist on condoms for penetration but not oral. It is not hypocritical. It is assessment of the risk.

I agree with Courtney above, it all relates to the degree of risk.

If you know someone to be HIV positive and you share blood with them through a needle let us say, you stand about a 1:2 chance of getting HIV.

Receiving anal sex with someone positive - 1.4% (1 in72 exposures)

Giving - less reliable studies but one study indicated 0.11% (1 in 909)

Insertive vaginal 4 in 10,000 and receptive 8 in 10,000

Oral transmission is likely to be much higher than this, and probably more likely for the receptive partner than the giver.

Remember this is for acts with those who are known to be HIV positive. In the UK infection rates are low - sub Saharan Africa much higher. If you have a partner from the UK who has themselves not had partners with a high risk group then the stats increase again.

So for oral sex with someone from a low risk group whose status is unknown the transmission risks are probably in excess of 1:150,000 or more - you could win the lottery. You could get cancer. You could get HIV from oral sex. The odds are heavily in your favour.
