This is a tongue in cheek post, please do not get irate about it, it is just a curious question regarding the way some people begin their story in the forums.

Does anyone else find it a tad odd when people begin their story with...so I walked into a pub or so I saw you on a train etc?

It just appears to be a strange way to start a thread!

Anyone else share this or is it just us? If no responses it's just us which wouldn't surprise me

Seems a good way to start a story.

But to be serious for a moment, I do not see the need to start with "so" both of my examples could of started I saw you on a train or you knocked on my door, the prefix of so is not required.

I am bored and this little ditty popped in my head, I know there are worse things however this just made me wonder after reading many posts which start this way in the forums

But is it a good way? The story will be the same with I saw you on a train, the "so" in so I saw you on a train is not required and adds little to the story.

Of course, 'but' isnt the correct way to start a sentence either I believe...I'm no grammarnazi myself to be honest, in fact they annoy me more than those less 'educated'...

Some people start stories with"so" some write "could of" instead of "could have". We all understand what they mean so I don't think its a problem

So I walked into this thread

I walked into this thread

Not sure of an explanation but I like so, it adds something almost personalising it

I do use it (verbally too) and like to see\hear it,

I quite often just look at somebody and say "so?"

No. Nothing grammatical bothers me on here. I have a reasonable grasp of written English myself and often write how things pop up in my head. You know, starting a sentence with but or and because I thought of something else and can't be bothered to delete the full stop and put a comma. My brain can un-jumble most grammar and spelling errors/typos.

I agree, as long as we can understand what's written or said I don't see a problem

Sorry I'm not saying it's grammatically correct or not, in fact I do not know whether it would be, I am just saying it does appear an odd way to begin a thread or story, to me it just doesn't read properly at the start, and like I said previously it doesn't enhance a story by it being there. So I approach you in a pub doesn't sound correct to me whereas I approach you in a pub does, just a conversation piece really not meant to start a war lol

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else

I also can't understand why everybody in an anecdote "turned around and said" things.

I've been to social gatherings, and I've never seen people spinning around while speaking.

Sorry, forgot to start with so.

So I thought about it, and I'm pretty sure I do this but I have no idea why. It's probably not grammatically correct like you're not supposed to start a sentence with 'And' but shit happens.

I have a Ladybird book of grammar and spelling at the office... I'll check on Monday.

It's just a linguistic style. I use it when I write things like blog posts because I think it gives a chatty, informal style. I wouldn't use it in my paid writing work for magazines or for my academic work though. It's not appropriate there.
