Can someone please tell me what this stands for? I have often seen this in profiles am completely in the dark, (no pun intended)

It's short for ampersand or '&'

& is used in web programming to concatenate string values, this causes problems if the string contains a & such as Bob & Kate. To overcome this there is a code that represents & and that is &. There is a glitch somewhere in the website programming that causes this to be misinterpreted and just the amp part is displayed.
