Up to 7 Billion to renovate and 35 years to complete the work

Around 3.5 billion but only if they move out, Over priced ?

Or is it worth it to keep one of the UK's best known buildings and the history that goes with it

No reason on earth why it has to be renovated to level proposed move it to say manchester as tories want it be be powerhouse of the north.

When public money is tight no justification for renovation why not sell to private sector or if they insist using taxpayers money then reduce money for royals.

As it is a grade 1 listed building it is going to cost a fortune to renovate.

It has to be renovated because its listed and the sooner it is done the cheaper it will be.

Move the MPs out, there must be a few army camps airforce or navy bases that are no longer used dump the MPs there until the renovations are done or a new building built and Bob's your uncle.

It would most probably be cheaper to permamently move parliament north as land, buildings etc are cheaper up north and this would be reflected in MPs expenses.

The Palace of Westminster could then be sold to defray expenses

Same folk ie investors who usually buy this stuff government have sold everything else why not this.

Taxpayers own it by default same as with rbs and post office yet taxpayers are buying back something they already own its crazy h9w gullible folk can be.

There is no logical reason to spend the quoted amounts when mps can relocate as others sometime do with their jobs.

Remember they can claim expenses so no real hardship.

I'm not against moving parliament up north. But I'm not sure investors will be banging down the doors to purchase a grade 1 listed unesco world heritage site that's going to cost £3.5bn in repairs and will have massive restrictions on what it could be used for (due to its world heritage site status).

Yes, scatter central government around the country. Or put the buggers in the millennium dome hehe!

Sell parts of parliament to developers who would fight for the prestige element of such a site. (Planning restrictions would be potentially leniant to assure that the building is best converted and rescued than kept as it is and crumbled).

Other parts would be a museum etc to keep it in public realm. I doubt it could be part government part residential due to safety issues.

Moving Parliament out of London doesn't make any sense, that is where the primary ministries are all based. Perhaps moving them to some of the military sites (Northolt or Woolwich) might be an idea. Perhaps they should find out what the military have had to put up with for temporary accommodation...

Historically Parliament moved round the country it was not in a fixed location.

There is no good reason for it to be so far south and it would be good for the country if it was moved north.

While we are on the subject of the "ministries" they could be moved as well saving billions per annum.

As per my status update, I thought Parliament usually cost a lot less to fix. 5.7bn is a lot of brown envelopes to fix something. Neil Hamilton worked for a lot less.
