Many will dismiss someone due to lots of graphic pics, boxes that have been ticked or not in preferences, or the tone of their profile (shouts, ranty, angry profiles come to mind) or by ill-judged messages (cut and paste ones, ones that are aggressive and overly graphic when hello would be sufficient, ones that slang off other site users either in general or specifically). There have been men who I've looked at and thought that they were physically stunners but something has made me think that if i spent five minutes in there company that I would regret it. I'm trying to understand more why you feel this way so I and others can better explain why the circumstances aren't comparable. You're comparing apples and oranges. Virtual interaction (Fab) is, as I said earlier, predominantly based on the visual - profile text, images and words. Real world (meeting in bars) whilst also based on the visual - immediate attraction for example (however the whole person can be seen) - also offers a judgement to be made based on conversation, body language, dress sense, manners - a much bigger picture. I don't really think that you compare the two. We've met people at parties that have been lovely and we've really hit it off with. Yet, if we had come across their profile online (before meeting them in person) in quite a few cases we wouldn't have messaged them, based on just the text/information on their profile. We would have assumed that we had little in common. It's far easier to get yourself across to others in person. Had similar discussions together and what we think is this: Men are happy to lower standards slightly on a site like this because it's the 'thing' that adds to the appeal. The scenario of the sexual liaison adds to the whole thing, whether that's an mmf, an ffm, a naughty encounter, whatever. The scenario is more of a draw. Women tend not to go on looks alone, a man's personality/dress sense/car/smell/etc can paper over the cracks of his looks, but on a site like this where you have to go largely on looks and what's written on the profile, then they tend to up their standards. As for women raising theirs I can only speak for myself and my standards are no different to men I talk to off site who I want sex with. I don't compromise off site.
