Syntax and Semantics - How much does it bother you?

Hello all!

Especially of late I've been reading some horrifically written forum posts. Perhaps it's just because I'm foolishly paying attention to it - but personally, it always irks me.

How much does spelling and grammar matter to you?

How often do you see it in messages, profiles and the forums?

Do you think it tells you much about a person?

Am I just being plain snobbish?

Not at all...i see some of the things people write and wonder how they got through school and made it into adulthood! Im not a snob, but there is something to be said for educated folk...some posts make me shout "you thick twat" out loud!

I would never look down upon someone who was born with the brain they have or missed schooling, for whatever reason. Calling someone thick is small-minded and not something I would expect from a decent, well educated person. One of my regular partners has an English degree from Oxford,he says he's thankful that he was born with an intelligent brain.

Absolutely infuriates me and I presumed the writer is unintelligent. It doesn't take much to be able to throw in the odd comma

I think this is the comment that resonates with me most. I personally link it to the other person's lacking in effort; that may translate in-person, too.

At least, with well-written people I've met - there hasn't been an issue in getting along.

Of course, it isn't true 100% of the time. Just because someone isn't an eloquent enigma, doesn't mean they don't know how to blow the socks off you, in person!

I think the people that worry about it are likely to regard their own abilities with grammar among their best attributes.

Pointing out petty spelling mistakes is pretty popular for some in here i've noticed

I don't mind lack of capitals, and the odd typo or spelling mistake. We can all do them. The meaning is still apparent most of the time. But poor punctuation to the point that its difficult to read is infuriating.

And if its hard for most of us, just think how hard it must be for a dyslexic.

It can make people look stupid, or at the very least lazy. I feel bad but it is hard not to make that assumption.

I reckon it's something about being able to respond to another person in a similar fashion. It at least then makes you feel as if you may have something in common with each other

Very true. If you (at least feel you) are on the same wavelength, at least there's some respect and familiarity there. But hey, it'd be boring if we were all the same.

I can get quite aroused by the way someone writes, not just from what they write but the style and use of grammar and punctuation. So, yes, it's important to me in that sense. However, I've met very sexy and compatible people who struggle with the written word but are nonetheless interesting and witty in spoken word. Text speak is a turn off for me though, it feels lazy. Maybe that's a generational thing.

My phone has vicious auto correct and I am currently wielding overlong nails since I'm treating myself to a manicure on Saturday. My posts and messages have been full of errors for at least a week but I don't see the point of editing them after the fact when the gist is obvious.

No not snobbish at all. i mean this with no disrespect at all, but if your here looking for someone you can socialise with and be friends with rather than just a quick fuck, then we naturally seek someone of a similar educational level. i personally am somewhat of a grammar nazi lol and get really frustrated by text speak and plain bad English.

Totally snobbish , we don't give a flying fuck about how well constructed a message is when ultimately we are looking for a hot sexy session !

And as for grammar , spelling , and punctuation , again that matters not one iota . As long as there's a pic attached and the sender is hot we are happy .

doesn't bother me so long as you can tell what they said.

i've actually got typing qualifications but because i'm used to chatting to loads of people at once i cut right back on using keys i don't have to to make chatting quicker and help my hands keep up with my brain and what it's thinking about. works well for me and nobody has complained, if they did i wouldn't change for them. i do what works for me.

i try to use more proper grammar when i have time, which isn't very often.

Do we?

I couldn't care if they had no education and were on the dole, or if they were educated to masters level, on here or in real life...in fact, that's pretty much the range of people I call friends, I'll happily sit in someone's coulcil flat who's on benefits (as one or two of my friends are) or will quite happily sit in the million pound converted barn of a company director, whom one of my friends is....

And their spelling has no bearing on weather I like them or not either....I'm a people person, not an education and money person.

Since the beggining, verbal or gestural communications have been created to make oneself understood.

Master a language is certainly a great achievement yet it doesn't assert your intellectual superiority over someone who doesn't.

Some people are "intellectual" other "manual". The manual ones can surely teach the intellectual ones how to use a simple tool such as a hammer.

To paraphrase Baltasar Gracian: Even a monarch must be willing to be taught.

Roughly half of the messages I receive are in 'txt spk' and the vast majority don't make any sense to me so I just delete those

I totally agreed with you. This infuriates me too. I can live with the odd spelling mistake. Fair enough but some messages are totally incomprehensible. And it's totally unforgivable when your profile is full of errors. Can't these people just quickly read back what they've typed before hitting the send button. Just makes them look like complete halfwits as far as I'm concerned.

Generally, if a person can't make sense in their message then they're unlikely to be for me. I am a writer and I like to think that I at least put a little care and attention into my posts, and that others should do the same.

However my nesting partner is heavily dyslexic and rarely makes sense in messages. I know him well enough to decipher what he means though - which is the crucial difference to someone mailing you out of the blue.

The forums are just that - they are not sexual approaches, or an academic work. They are often just sporadic thoughts on a page and if the thread is worth replying to and I can be bothered, I will. Some people do treat them as an exercise in dictum, (as they like a challenge) when they 1. have no intention of meeting them. 2. Even if they had intention of meeting them, logistics/preferences would probably intervene anyway.

On a profile it's a different matter. I can forgive the odd spelling mistake for what they actually say. I am put off by bitchiness, over expectation, excessive demands or a simple lack of an attempt to write anything at all.

Forums are not an English test but where the wrong word is used, or the spelling is plain wrong, it is not writing too fast or autocorrect causing it; is is often they simply do not know the right spelling.

If you are posting for others to read you are communicating so you should try and make it clear and understandable.
