Do the poppers now sold in sex shops and saunas really work ie make your arse muscles relaxed or was it just the older versions ie amyl nitrate that do that.

They all contain alkyl nitrates (amyl nitrate is isopentyl nitrate) which releases NO into the bloodstream. This causes the relaxation of smooth muscles throughout the body but including the anal sphincters. It also causes the blood vessels to relax leading to the head rush and falling blood pressure. This can be a very serious issue for those with underlying heart problems or using other drugs which also generate NO in the blood such as viagra, Cialis etc.

Due to various bans on isopentyl nitrate and isobutyl nitrate, as far as I know most European poppers are now based on isopropyl nitrate whilst the American blends are based on cyclohexane nitrate.

Very informative... That's my learning point of the day!

Doh. Brain not full in gear this morning. Those should be nitrites not nitrates and cyclohexyl nitrite for the American blends.
