Once you've messaged a guy, he can message back, even though the filters are in place...

Guys on your friends list can still message.

You won't be cutting out those you already know.

Filters just mean you have to do the initial work of finding those you like.

I did this on my old profile a while back and it worked very well, I tend to have more successful meets when I make first contact although I rarely get abuse but just have a laugh at their pathetic immaturity if I do, nice to know I've dodged a bullet.
