We're not snobs or old-fashioned but why do some ads and replies use the sort of text speak that kids use on their mobiles? It doesnt make you look young and sexy - this is one ad from a couple in their 40's. It doesnt make me want to meet them!

"we are u cpl luking 4 sum fun. we can travel and are genuien we looking for cple OR sngl lady who share our sme experiances.

NO SINGLE MAN THXI

B4 meeting up we like 2 establish contact thru msn chat & also chck on phone as well 2 ensure every1 is who & what they say they R !!!if you r only into collecting pic DONT EVEN BOvvER wasting r time or yrs pls"

THOUGHTS?

Not keen on it myself. a little bit here and there is okay, it's no different to using lol or pmsl. but as much as i'm a technophile i struggle to read some of it. i'm posting this from my phone and i can't bring myself to use txt. i certainly wouldn't use it in an email, although with the amount of replies i get on here i doubt it'd make a blind bit of difference if i did

I personally hate text speak. I don't mind so much when it's used to send a long text but hate it other forms of communication. Half the time i can't understand it.

Text speak is great, as a text message, although to be honest I don't use text talk so much now as I have so many messages with the current deal I have with my network provider that I don't feel the need to squeeze so much in one message, but I don't believe text talk has such a place in personal messages on a site like this, for one, there's no saying the other member will understand it, not so bad if friends and both understand, but as an opening message it just doesn't make sense, sending a message is almost like sending a cv here, you have to generate interest, and text talk will put many off.

I wouldn't say text speak is childish or lazy. The English language is always changing and text speak is part of that change and way to chat via text/emails etc.

And i'm sure it doesn't matter how single girls write messages as they will always have friends and meets no matter what.

I can not stand text speak.

I think it shows laziness. If your going to send a message at least make the effort.

I think it had its place when people didn't get a million free texts a month, and were limited by space in a message.

There days though i think it is just a short cut. The lack of effort can usually be seen by the fact that the sentences make so sense, using u instead of i for example.

Leave it alone i say.

I got a phone with a keyboard and a contract with bulk txt’s

So now I generaly don’t cut things down and use it more like email.

But I do think about the 160 blocks so may chop the end of a sentence.

If its hard to read it's not serving its purpose.

We started it off and its interestng to see what you've said. Single girls will get replies if they wrote in bloody Chinese so I'm interested in what couples say. Personally, we use text speak on our phones sometimes - its quicker to do when you're driving at 100 mph up the M1 for example (just joking - we never use the M1) - but in an ad or a reply it makes me think "oh my god - this is someone of 39 who'll turn up wearing a back to front baseball cap" - Good luck to those who use it but it doesnt do it for us.

It's just down to idleness and hides the fact that the users probably can't spell or string a sensible sentence together anyway.

yawwwwwwwn, or maybe people use it to type quicker so they can get on with other parts of their life.

not everyone needs to type in full words i see some people typing so much using non text speak and have very little to say where someone can type a few words in text speak and it says very much.

Or on the other hand,it could just be that some people were taught certain standards that they like to maintain.

It's nothing to do with having their heads up their backsides or not being honest, genuine or friendly.

It could just be that they prefer to put a bit of time and effort in what they do and like to meet people who do the same, simple as that.

You misunderstand what I mean, it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with idleness either. If people prefer to meet those who only type the queens english then hey, who are we to argue?, but my point is simple and is my personal opinion not aimed at anyone. My pet hates are rude, ignorant and unfriendly people so that is why I made a point of saying, that although not a great fan of text talk, as long as people are not any of the above then it doesn't matter to me how they type, it's simple xxx
