Any women who've had a massage whilst pregnant...

I was taught dont do in 1st 3 months but after its ok if you take care with belly and legs.

Any special tips about best positions? What to do for lower back pain?

Ive done some massage training - non professional - but never done a woman with a baby inside!

There are specialist massages for pregnant women, although I've just avoided them altogether.

Can't answer in a professional sense but for lower back pain, I always found laying on my side/standing and leaning over something and having my lower back massaged in a circular motion used to help. It will depend on each individual woman though, some will like firm kneading, some won't.

I am a qualified holistic and sports therapist

Your right first three months no massage , then depending on the individual massage should be fine however certain oils should be avoided

As for position you can buy special pillows or just use normal pillows around bump you cal also massage in a seated position

Massage can help massively with back pain , help to sleep swollen ankles etc

Is it the image of a pregnant woman standing bent over something or "a firm kneading"?

My goodness what a load of old tosh! If pregnancies could be damaged or ended by massage we would have no need of medical and surgical terminations! Maybe I could set up a back street massage clinic????

Look at it this way a lot of pregnancies end In the first trimester as a professional Therapist it wouldnt be a good idea to risk a person having a massage then having a miscarriage shortly after same as you would massage a cancer patient without medical consent and yes some oils are not recommended in pregnancy

Completely forgot about the smoke and mirrors or snake oil if you prefer that is aromatherapy. Yet to see abortionists using a sniff of Clary sage rather than curettage

Smoke, mirrors and snake oil!!??? No one said it WILL end a pregnancy only it COULD... . Why would you even risk it....if you were that desperate to end a pregnancy surely most sane people would get professional help rather than getting clary sage, hot baths, gin and knitting needles!!!!

Anyone local do massages..... My back and shoulders are like kneading wood.... Feel free to giz a nudge (fatbird)

OP, see your local chiropractor. Some specialise in treating pregnant ladies and babies. Relief is just a phone call away.

East Manchester

I was trained in massage therapy many years ago, and the warning about massaging women in their first trimester was that by statistical analysis alone it isn't the best time to give a massage.

There are too many cases of miscarriage in this period of pregnancy to risk adjustments to and influence of their bodies natural self regulatory mechanisms.

In fact in America it can be cause for a law suit if shortly after receiving a massage the mother loses the baby.

There are specialist masseuse who are skilled in massage throughout the pregnancy period and are trained in avoiding the areas on the body which can stimulate pelvic muscles and the uterus, with the possibility of pre term contractions and Braxton Hicks contractions a very real threat they keep a close watch for signs of activity, even trained massage therapists are wary of treating pregnant ladies in their first trimester.

After week 12, neck, shoulder and back massage can be used to relive stiffness and relax the patient and she can indicate v which position she is most comfortable in.
