Plumber

Need some advise we have a radiator that gets hot at the top and sides but not in the middle and bottom we have tried bleeding it but no better any advise please

It could be filled with sediment which means the system would need draining and flushing out. Or remove the radiator and rinse it out using a hosepipe. Or replace the radiator.

But check with a qualified plumber first.

Try tapping the cool area as you bleed it

Bleed all the radiators, start from the first the boiler feeds and end with the last one, the airlock will be in the complete system, im not a plumber but we had the same problem and that's what I did and all was good afterwards

you do not have air in the rad as air will always rise to the top(so it. the rad has sediment in it that has settled to the bottom you need to remove and flush the rad and add some inhibiter to the system to help keep it clean.

best way is to take it off

if you have thermostatic valve make sure your system is off or you have the proper cap to close the radiator off

once radiator is closed on both ends bleed the excess pressure out of the bleed valve

the fun part check to see if ypu can lift the radiator about 5mm-10mm if yes you can do the below method

with 2 spanners the side one is to lift or push down depends on which way your loosening the valve always the opposite to your loosening also stops you damaging the olive on the inlet pipe

use 2 towels and place under the ends of the radiator using 2 spanners one placed at the side one placed over the nut slacken off both sides and i do mean slacken only as radiator still holds water lift and spin the radiator so the top rests on the floor

dont push on the radiator while you slacken the nuts off the radiator until lose enough so the valve can be gently pushed to the side with a long radiator you are best with 2 people as one holds the end stopping the release of water from the pipe inside the radiator do the same with the other side and lift and carry to a toilet bath or outside

the wet part need a hose pipe or even a pressure washer to blast water through the radiator therefore flushing it out keep going until water is clean

the fitting is the reverse then becomes the filling of the system by turning the valves on and also checking the boiler pressure is normally 1 bar or 1.5 bar pressure as you may need to top the pressure back up again upon the refilling of the radiator also must be filled whilst cold due to expansion of the water due to heat

the difference between air and sediment in radiators

air the radiator does not get red hot at the top of the radiator

sediment is where the radiator only gets hot at sides and the top

if sediment cannot be cleaned from the radiator and still has the same issue after a flush out you either use a cleaning agent or you get another radiator

id advise another radiator as its newer tech and much warmer than the old radiators

Hey chick. I'm a plumber. You don't have any air in the system your problem is the black sludge from the corrosion throught the heating system is in the radiator. You either need a power flush (you only want to do that if a few more rads are the same as it's very expensive.) or do as somebody said above and remove the radiator and put a hose pipe in it turn it on and bang on all of the radiator. This should work!

If not another method before paying a plumber to power flush it is to go to your nearest plumbers merchants/ wickes and get some system cleaner! This works wonders! It should only be around £10 and all you have to do is drain your system down, put the cleaner in and fill back up. Leave that in for a week and then drain down and put some inhibitor in and fill back up and hey presto that should work!!

Yeah Def sounds like sludge. Put some system cleaner in. Drain system out then refill. If it don't work then power flush is needed

Be careful who you choose to powerflush your system.. some company's (who drive blue vans) charge a fortune to flush a system. drain your self and a £10 system cleaner will save you a fortune as even if you do in the end need a power flush a plumber will still drain/add clean/ drain again so save yourself 2 or 3 visits ;-D
