"Invite double you want to attend your party as half will drop out"

Oh how true. Add a Government Health Warning to your invitations, as in the 48 hours prior to your party there is a massive increase in the risk of illness, injury, disease, heart attacks strokes and sundry hospitalization amongst friends and relatives of potential guests, and of course to the friends and relatives of the baby sitters that people rely on...apparently.

The thing is you will never know which ones are true and genuine and which ones are just excuses and there's rugger ball you can do about it.

Best thing is to go to a few parties, and see what others do, then do what you think works for you in your own way to make your parties unique in their own way.

Not entirely true..agreed a couple may drop out...but I seriously wouldn't invite double the amount of people you want there.

I hold lots of parties and in the main if people say there coming then they come.

My advice is tell the people who attend its a no pressure to play. And just come along and enjoy themselves..and if things happen then they if not then so be it

"Not entirely true..agreed a couple may drop out...but I seriously wouldn't invite double the amount of people you want there...."

You do have to invite more the number you want because, especially here on FAB, half of the invitations don't even get responded to.

Then of the replies you get, half won't be able to make it...

...and of the half that do, 20% will drop out in the 48-72 hours before the event, either with or without a last minute apology.

We had a party, 100% turned up just as they said they would. We must be doing something wrong....

As an experienced party host I agree with this...but with the proviso that you know most of the attendees. Amongst those you don't know well if have not previously met..half will drop out or not show.

Worse case scenario is too many turn up! I had 38 came to one if mine....bloody hectic but much fun!
