health centre and condoms

Went to my doctors today for a prescription. Whilst I was at the counter a lad comes over and asks for some condoms, the receptionist asked if he was registered and he said no but I am next door. (It's a big new place that's just been built but is split half an half inside with 2 gp's in) so cos he was registered next door they wouldn't give him any an told him to go to his own gp. He said eh Why? So receptionist asked him why not go to your gp he said cos I go there all time and I feel embarrassed enough as it is now'. The lad went red poor sod lol

Surely registered or not a gp health centre shouldn't turn down anyone wanting Condoms?? I thought that's stupid.

The way GP's are protective of their budgets I'm not surprised. If he's old enough to be having sex he's old enough to go to the right GP surgery. What next? Put the condom on for him cos he's too embarrassed ffs.

It's a health centre, surely it shouldn't matter. They way they go in about unsafe sex and transmitted diseases they should give them to anyone.

No they can already get them free from the gum clinic and get advice about sti's. GP's have budgets they dont just give them out to every tom, dick and harry. Why should they? Don't you think that GP practices are on their knees this time of year? Ever tried getting an appointment recently? Hey I've got a good idea - lets give out free condoms to everyone who wants a shag over christmas and is too lazy to go to gum or tight to go to Boots.

I agree with this.

Plus he might be embarrassed to buy them or not have the money to.

I remember getting condoms from the clinic and they only gave you 30 to last 3 months, lol no way was that enough but hey NHS is free and we had more kids instead.

Are condoms more expensive than kids?

Nope but sex is free without condoms, and if you wanna have sex but got no money then are people really more likely to care or not.

I was being sarcastic as well. I used rhythm method for years with me ex and luckily it worked for us.

It is more down to the attitude that people will take risks when they want to or feel they have to. At least the guy asking at the clinic was trying not to take any risks before even considering other more risky options possibly?

Dumfries

They are provided to the GP practices for free from the health authority and should be freely available no matter who a person is registered with. We always make sure there is a supply in the public toilet at the health centre so no one is embarrassed by asking

Is that the same in England?

Is there an age limitation? Or is anyone entitled a free bunch of condoms?

Essex

My GP surgery wont provide condoms, contraceptive implant, coil or diaphragms. However if you are willing to travel roughly 5 miles then the family planning will help you. My GP will only give you the contraceptive pill or the injection.

At my first test appointment with gp nurse, she gave me condoms. personally I think he should have been given them, but also there are places to buy them that are cheap and they do the same job. Bloody receptionists are bulldogs. Think they rule the place
