Depends on the size of the dog really, I just read that a dangerous dose would be 25g per kilo of dog... but that's just a rough guide. It does also depend on the type of chocolate, dark is worse than milk.

one of our Collies ate a half bag of caramel mini chocolates, the vet said not to worry as the chocolate content in milk chocolate isn't enough to worry about depending on the amount eaten and the size of the dog..

85% cocoa may be a different issue..

Even with smaller amounts, I'd expect vomiting and diarrhoea, maybe even breathing issues...

If it's milk chocolate then the "dangerous" amount is about double.

I'd contact a vet if I was you

It's also worth trying to get your dog to eat... to dilute the toxic effects of the chocolate

You could get some activated charcoal from the pharmacy, if the ingestion was very recent. It prevents absorption of some toxins in the gut.

He's eaten dry chicken, also he's only vomited once (earlier) while I was at work.... He ate it back up aswell, he's acting normal now though... Very normal. His poo is still solid aswell.

The worse thing is continued giving a dog chocolate. They can sorta get addicted to it (as well as it being bad for them). Then if you stop giving it them their temperament can become irrational. Giving the chocolate again although will calm them down then increases the health risk.

We know someone who gave a chocolate regular. Nasty dog in the end. A one off dose of chocolate can be ok but make the dog ill a bit. Continued chocolate feeding will in the end prove fatal either by the dog becoming very iill. However I am talking about people who give a dog chocolate regular. We can all see that you are responsible and caring for your dog. The dog will no doubt repay you in a few clean up jobs. I used to work for a famous dog breeder (in the doggy world). She was full of knowledge. Here is a random good idea she gave me. When walking a dog always take a can of hair spray in your pocket. If another dog attacks your dog or vice versa a blast of spray between them is enough to break up the fight without you putting your hand in the middle of them. Does not harm them. Gives them a small bout of sneezing and they will back off. You get to keep your fingers.

Back to chocolate. As vet says, keep an eye on your dog. You know the dog and you will see improvement. If it does look a little down just give the vet a quick call for advice. If they think it is worth you popping in they will say. I think you just gotta let it get through the dogs system. The toxins will slowly die down and doggy will be back to normal. Until then... Keep the pooper scooper handy. You may be needing it.

Many years ago my grandparents used to feed their jack russell a bag of cadburys chocolate buttons every day because he wouldn't eat doggy chocs and he lived to the ripe old age of 15.

I know there are lots of things we are told are dangerous for our pets to eat these days and it's always better to err on the side of caution but in the past they have eaten pretty much most of these things with no adverse effects at all.

Im sure hes going to be fine.I had a GSD who 'stole' a tray of Thorntons chocolates out of my fridge.Ate the lot including wrappers and she didn't have any adverse effects.Im sure he will be fine in the morning!!
