Swinging in mainstream media

As a wannabe writer of fiction I have noticed since joining fab and learning more about swinging that it's far more common than most folk realise. Yet swingers/swinging is rarely mentioned in fiction or on film/tv.

Should we be better represented? Should swinging be discussed more widely?

If the mainstream media were to run a storyline on swinging you can bet your bollocks it would be negative, heaven forbid eastenders (for example) would have a swinging couple without it ending in betrayal and murder

I think consensual and legal sexual activity should be presented without bias in the media. Opinions and attitudes are influenced far too readily by soaps, newspaper editors and journalists.

I think within the scene our activities are our normality . In the outside world i still feel there is too much predujice for swinging to be represented fairly . Societies reaction particilarly to women having more than one sexual partner is still stuck in the victorian era

Societies reaction and often reaction from within the swinging community is still often quite intolerant of bisexual male behaviour. Even the gay scene can dislike us.

There aren't many examples but I remember a drama from the late 90s with Martin Clunes that had swinging as the central plot device. It was called Touch and Go and inevitably it had swinging as a catalyst for the decline of a relationship. I suspect it's tricky for mainstream media to treat it any other way. Be interested to see if forumites can recall other examples.

I think it would be misrepresented very badly in the main stream media..Even us in the lifestyle grapple with what swinging is or should be (as often illustrated in the forums).....imagine this multiplied a 100 times for the sake of entertainment value

Swinging is in the msm, just doesn't have to have the recurrance and swinging exists on a much larger scale than fab, secret societies, social class events etc.its just that not everyone has a 24hr swinging lifestyle.

This is the best forum subject ive seen!and one we all actually agree on lol.We live in Benidorm,and thanks to the series benidorm..people say oh ru the swinging couple donald and jackie!so we agree the media always make it either a joke..or make you out to be some sort of sex freak!..we would welcome a serious documenty or other media to cover it in a 'factual' way rather then fiction!

Anything besides vanilla sex is seemed as the darker side of human sexual nature, so there would be no point of making swinging part of the mainstream. 50shades of grey was received well by the mainstream but the actual people in the scene hated it as it was watered down.

There are plenty of documentaries covering swinging/swinging holidays/swinging parties but everything is done for entertainment purposes and to shock and awe viewers so no good would come outta those. . To be honest my first documentary that got me thinking about cuckolding and swinging was one about 'Mandingos' and some other following a couple from the website cuckold place.

Sex has mostly been taboo until really the entry into the EU and satelite channels.

Remember a show on sky with a young Norton discussing sex, very taboo in those days but being British was very giggly.

Germany and Holland have discussed sexual issues for donkeys years in a more mature and sophisticated way.

Excellent talk shows without the patheitc ooh err attitude of the British.

England is a far way off from our European counterparts

The delightful departed Rick Mayall stared in a BBC comedy about suburban swinging. The only thing I can remember about it now was that you can see where the swingers live, because they have Pampas grass in the garden!

I still subconsciously look for it when we go on a meet.)

Our worry of what others would think of us is what holds so many people back. Yes we've moved forward a lot but most people are still ashamed of sexual freedom. A program that focused on us as human beings and not the spawn of Satan would be good.

No TV company wilk make an unbiased and realistic programme about swinging. If they followed us for a year they would be bored shitless, as it is just a very small part, of our very normal, boring humdrum day to day life of school runs, housework, work, running a business and all the other things...And to be honest we are probably in the majority here...

All they would do is find a young professional couple , with time and money available and follow them to clubs every other night for a month. Either that or theY will find people exactly like that godawful C4 doc on dogging d, and turn it into a joke..I dont think either are a true representation of the type of people who swing, or am I alone in that opinion

I like the idea but would say no as it would just attract more people of both sexes just after a bit on the side and its debatable if thats swinging or not.

that was a brilliant programme. I noticed that John did prejudge swinging and the people who swing before he met them though. Like most of society I guess

I agree. I think we swingers just see it as the norm.

But only the other day an acquaintance of mine joked about 'dirty swingers' and got a big laugh. It is still seen as taboo and dirty due to a false stereotype. I could have tried to correct him and declared openly I am a swinger. But I like keeping it secret so I can enjoy this part of my life with just those who are like minded.

If I TV Company tried to do a serious documentary who here would actually agree to go on it? We all know that putting a mask on or a bit of blurring does not hide your identity. Your work mates and vanilla social friends will still know its you. Would you take the chance? And do we want the people who would take the chance to be the ones representing our community in the public eye?

It seems to me that much of the perceived bias against swinging, can be explained by ignorance and fear of the unknown. Before we were swingers having sex with others seemed too far fetched to be possible. Now we understand differently.
