It's about the breathing, too. If you can take a deep breath first, it helps stop the gag reflex. Or breath out and try to to breath back in too soon.

Just relax into it and yes, it does help to be on your back initially with your head back but it can also feel very claustrophobic that way as you have no control over the depth, so only with someone you trust to stop when you say.
