I have never ridden a horse but have to admit riding bareback like the North American Indians did must have been very dangerous. How on earth did they stay on?

If it bucks you don't stay on the horse as as I found out to my cost, we were playing cowboys and Indians at the time. we also did a thing were you had to get on a horse while someone else was riding it, I got my foot in the stirrup but slipped as I was pulling my myself onto it's back and got dragged along the floor. It was at a riding school I was going at the time, (I was in my 30s) and the Christmas lesson we played games

You just need to balance well and wrap your thighs round the horse firmly but with a relatively relaxed muscle, go with the movement and rotate your hips

Balance and posture also work with horses movement rather than against it.

Balance and gripping with your thighs it's how i learnt to ride xxx
