It's only risky while it's in a flare up... You do carry the virus for life though but many people do without ever realising it .

thought is, she should get this information from her local GUM clinic, not a mate or us. They'll have the latest clinically evidenced information, we'll just have speculation, opinion or rumour...

People with Herpes Simplex, types one and two shed their virus continually and having intimate contact with someone over a period of time who has it will most likely cause you to develop it. Flare ups are the time when its most likely to be passed on but there is never a safe time, nasty disease, incurable and virulent

My understanding is we have about 6 million carries of the sexually transmitted disease,a lot don't even know they have it,it will appear for a few days when stressed,unwell,weakened immune system etc... usually a blister or sore often around the genital area.Can be brought about by sexual guilt..

As previously stated it is incurable,so in time most people may have it..

Not much different from cold sore etc.

You are not permanently infectious

Most of us get type 1 and carry it for ever but don't walk round with permanent cold sores because our immune system normally keeps a hold on it

It's the exposed vesicles that are the infectious time

You're mainly correct...

Depends a lot on individual immune systems. I wouldn't call it a nasty disease as it's no worse than a cold sore it just has a nasty stigma attached to it. There are many herpes viruses and most people will be exposed to a number of them during their life time. Type 1 and 2 are more commonly called oral and genital herpes although you can get either in either place. Some people get both. More infectious during an outbreak yes but viral shedding happens at any time. Soap is the worst enemy of the virus. Infection can occur through any contact not just sexual. It can take days, weeks, months or even years after infection for the first outbreak to occur. It's a very interesting virus and within a short period of time it's highly likely there will be a vaccination like there is for hpv. This is not a cure though.

Mainly correct?? Oh....the nasty disease thing? Well anyone suffering their first taste of HSV II on their genitals I think would vouch that it is quite nasty! Especially when the GP diagnoses a flare up of psoriasis and does not prescribe anti virals

A higher percentage of the adult population carry the herpes simplex virus and most of them are blissfully unaware because they are asymptomatic, meaning they don't show any physical signs of having it or they sometimes have cold sores, which by the way is a form of herpes.

Herpes, even genital herpes, isn't mainly a sexually transmitted disease, although sex can be a way of transmission. You can get it in all sorts of ways that involve contact and exposure to a carrier during a period when they're having an attack, which may or may not have any physical manifestations.

So, while nobody likes to catch any virus, the stigma attached to herpes, especially the very common ones, is not warranted, because there are worse things that infect people that don't get anywhere near as bad a press.

I had chicken pox when I was 24 and that was pretty nasty ..... Herpes simplex 1 ( generally cold sores but can be genital) zoster ( chicken pox) or varicella( shingles) can all be pretty horrible if you unlucky enough to get it badly but a lot I'd people are lucky and hardly notice it
