First Date - Bipolar

Jump to newest

If anyone saw First Date on Channel 4 last night, there was a lady who was 46, she said she was Bipolar and her only medicine was sex.

She said she craved sex as it made her mood swings so much less and seemed to settle her condition, so she was rampant.

Do you think this is an excuse, or do you think this is what drives a lot of people to find "sex fixes" with a lot of partners as often as possible?

I am bipolar and when I am manic sex is all I think about and I am insatiable but with that also comes a lack of judgement and after a manic episode there comes a great big crash x

I was going to say she was probably in the middle of a manic phase when she said that

Chasing the Dragon I call it, even though I know that is a phrase coined for drug use. I am sure there are a lot of people using sex to ease all kinds of psychic pain, yes.

Men can be bipolar too and I would think many have similar experiences.

My doctor asked me yesterday what my new vice was since I seem to be doing so much better dealing with my stressors.... I just smiled and told him that I found a few extra ways to help relieve my stress.

It really does help sometimes. Not always a 100% fix but definitely help a lot

Its not that easy my meds keep me sane/stable. Yes when I am manic its fun and I am life and soul of the party first one in the playroom etc but then it can be dangerous not caring who I had sex with and a few that I went bare with I am not proud of what I did and the stuff I did when I was manic I totally regret but they happened and I cant take them back. This is not an excuse its just the way it was resulting in a pregnancy a termination and a stint in the mental hospital as my mania became unstable. I was lucky and had no stds but I would not wish this on my worst enemy it is something I have to live with every day. I cant say for others but this is just one account of my manic episode x

Thank you for being so honest and giving those who do not suffer such an extreme mental health disorder insight into being bipolar. Anyone who has never suffered mental health issues can have no idea how debilitating they can be and how they impact on daily living.

To suggest not taking prescribed medication is quite frankly ridiculous - its akin to telling a cancer patient that they should refrain from having chemotherapy or radiotherapy?

I have a friend with bipolar, not on here, who when stable is very prim, proper, quiet and bodering on shy. When she has a manic episodes, she goes partying in London (she lives in a small village with her hippy style parents) and will sleep with anyone. She's asked me and my ex for threesomes and asked my ex if she could blow him, just to name a couple of things. Luckily we were her friends (i still am) so we obviously didn't take her up on it and obviously didn't find it offensive either. But it does hurt and worry me to think what she gets up to when in London on her own (or probably not on her own), and whose taken advantage of her. When she comes down she feels dirty and ashamed and it usually ends in a stint in a mental health facility

Lauz x

One of the symptoms of the very complex bipolar could be hypersexuality. I should imagine that this can lead to all kinds of vulnerability for both sufferer and sexual partner.

I do wonder sometimes at the rationale for why there are seemingly quite a few bipola sufferers on a swinging site looking for nsa sex. Is it a symptom or are they swingers. Would you be happy playing with someone when you couldn't totally be sure they weren't in a manic phase or not. I would feel uncomfortable with the feeling of taking advantage of a vulnerable person suffering from mental illness.

And this isn't aimed at you shazza, I have seen posts by members new on the scene and seemingly active, posting about their illness and then just as quickly leaving.

As I've just said, id feel cautious so I probably wouldn't meet if doubt was there

This discussion has answered some of my questions regarding bipolar and is proving insightful. I have a friend (not on this site) who has bipolar. Often during her episodes she makes references to sex. She has made advances towards me but of course I was not interested and do not want to take advantage of her. Is there not a permanent cure other than taking daily dosage of medication which I believe only serves to nullify her? Also, taking the medication can it have any affect regarding pregnancy?
