I'm a big fan of Guillermo Del Torro but I didn't like The Devil's Backbone. His best is Pan's Labyrinth.

To the OP I'd suggest "The Others" with Nicole Kidman. Really good supernatural film.

The Others with Nicole Kidman,

This film has some good 'BOO!' moments and made the hair on the back of my neck stand on end too.

There's another one from years ago about a WWII US bomber crew stranded in the desert. That was a tear jerker in the end but I can't remmebr the name of that film
