i hate not turning up when ive arranged to meet someone but what do you think of the following situation

i arranged to meet a couple about 70 miles away. After arranging to meet and while chatting i happened to mention my computer was running slow.

they insisted that i go on a website that would give them access to my computer so they could check whats wrong with it. I didnt like the sound of it so i made my excuses and changed the topic of conversation. But the next day while talking again they suggested i bring the computer up on the day we had arranged to meet. i said i had decided to buy a new one so it wasnt worth it

However on the day i was to visit they phoned up to again ask me to bring the computer up with me. I said i wasntnt going to bother doing because i'd decided to buy a new one. The girl sounded very disappointed with this answer and said her partner would have nothing to do if i did not bring ir with me

at that stage i just thought sod this and texted to say i wouldnt be going

was i right to have my doubts and cancel ?

since cancelling they have texted and phoned about 20 times criticising my decision not to go

it all seems quite surreal

Brighton - even Hove!

Send them a message saying 'this is from my new computer - it can say 'fuck off' all by itself'

You did the right thing. Sounds weird.

Mmmm sounds strange to me. Why would they want your computer? You have every right to cancel a meet if you dont feel comfortable.

Did you get a new pc/laptop?

Im thinking of investing in a laptop so I can use the chat rooms to be/view cam

All sounds very strange to me. You did right in cancelling although with their criminal record, I probably wouldn't have arranged to meet in the first place. Better luck next time, just remember to leave your laptop at home

For anyone in doubt if cancelling was a good idea, here's another way to look at it: if the OP was a single female would you still say "too quick to judge - you should have not cancelled"?

Someone I know (female) allowed a male "friend" to check out her computer to make sure it was running OK. Some time later, she became aware that he had installed something on it and was accessing all her emails and reading all her personal texts on her mobile too. I am not a techie and don't know how that is possible, but you absolutely did the right thing to say no. They could have stalked you without you knowing.

Hence why I started with "For anyone in doubt", call it a pre-emptive strike, but with a lot of threads tend to be a pattern where its usually a matter of time before someone posts a gender-biased opinion.

There are programs that do this, I've seen it before. My advice is if anyone is doing anything with your computer do any or all of the following:

1) Make sure you have a main user accoutn with a password needed to get in (which ofcourse they don't know).

2) they can only use the guest account with no admin rights so unable to install anything

3) if possible, sit next to them so you can see everything being done.

4) have them walk you through everything they are doing - any website they browse and DEFINITELY if they want to install something: you want to know what it is, what it does, what website they got it from and show you how it works, and when done how to remove it.

5) If using windows, you need to learn how to do a "system restore" (it takes a snapshot of your computer at a moment in time) so you can "go back" to how your computer was before any changes were made.
