I've recently joined weight watchers and have already lost a fair few pounds. To keep me motivated and on track I wondered if anybody else is on a diet / or fancy loosing weight. Males, females and couples welcome. Maybe have some sexercise to loose some extra calories lol. But seriously anybody is welcome as I can meet new friends who share the same determination. Any nasty or negative comments can be left at the door thankyou or do everyone a favor and go boil your head.

I'm watching my weight at the moment.

Watching it creep up mostly, unfortunately. Managed to get it down a few lbs since Christmas though so it's hopefully heading in the right direction again.

I put on a stone in a year, being down and not looking after myself but onwards and upwards in 2014.

Don't bother. I lost 4 stone on it last year in 3 months. Put 3 stone back on in 2 months. It's a waste of money and bloody horrible. Plus u will lose it quickly and have hideous floppy skin. Trust me it's not worth doing!

Weight watchers, slimming world and similar organisations, make money by keeping you fat.

If you lose weight and maintain the weight loss they would soon be out of business.

Everyone who joins loses weight initially, because its a change to your system. It's what gets you hooked, 2lbs one week, 3 lbs the next.

then 1 lbs, + 2 lbs.

Then you get encouraged to buy the products. Weight watchers sell cakes and ready meals, of course you will try them, and because they are tiny, you will lose weight !

but they are full of salt, and chemicals to give them flavour.

I realise that for some people, having the support of others in a similar situation helps , and yes its nice to compare information, some group leaders are really inspirational and do help their group, some are just doing it for the extra money they earn, same as in all businesses there are good , bad, and indifferent.

At the end of the day people are overweight because they eat more than they need, the only answer is to eat less and to move more, there are 101 reasons for overeating, my reason is for protection,

I was hurt in love many years ago, to protect myself I wanted to stop people being interested in me, in the gay community being fat, is one easy way to become invisible.

If weight is affecting your health ( which it always will do )

Your doctor is the first port of call, a good dietician and prescription exercise are 2 fantastic tools to use.

10 stone is more than I weigh but congratulations to you as that is so good and inspiring. Surprised your not inundated with people asking you how you did it. You should run classes because I have noticed weight seems to be a big subject ( no pun intended ) on here discussed.

I have disagree, I've not done weight watchers but slimming world isn't like that. They don't do cakes and ready meals and encourage exercise with their body magic. I've been on it 5months and if you do it right, it works. Never had a gain. They make their money because society is how it is and people will always be fat and need to lose weight, so when I lose all that I need to there will always be another me ready to sign up.

Good luck to those on weightwatchers etc but bit of advice do not be fooled into thinking their products are the best for you.

Compare suoermarket own brands and you will see on most items weightwatchers stuff are not as good calorie or salt intake or fat wise.

Do not forget its a business and the hype is massive.

i have tried the points thing long time ago and it helped but now just eat reasonably healthy but more importantly do lot of excercise.

Good luck folks.

Slimming world is a multi million pound business,

They encourage you to eat as much as you want of certain foods,

for instance,

Fried eggs, chips and baked beans, as much as you want,

Super foods.

Even though you boil and oven bake your chips a plate full is not good for you.

Slimming world doesn't encourage you to buy their own products, because unlike weight watchers who are in partnership with Heinz, they wouldn't profit from being funded by a food manufacturer.

Whatever works for you, has to be a good thing, and good luck in your quest, but at the end of the day, the second rule in business, is to keep your customers, because its cheaper than getting new ones. Oh the first rule, is to make money.

and you will lose another 3 stone, and as soon as you stop will put it back on, dieting keeps you fat.

walk more, swim, dance, take the dog for a walk,

and eat less, learn to leave food on your plate, and use a smaller plate.

Please do not take offence but fact you put back the three stone seems to be yourself not the diet as the problem.

Once folk grasp whats good and bad there is no need to stick to a particular diet in my experience.

Sorry to be negative but Diets, are cheating and bad for you. You starving yourself of essential nutrients.

I know guys and girls who eat mountains of food but have less than 10% body fat. They just burn off more than they eat. I'm not in bad shape but not Greek god if you get me. But I understand it's easy to shed weight if you stick to.

3 times a week 1 hour of hard exercise.

Eat your 5 a day. Ie piece mid morning, one with lunch, one mid afternoon, then two pieces of steamed veg with a piece of meet (not processed, preferably from the butcher rathervthsn supermarket so has not been washed in preservatives and no added water)

Cereal such as weatabix for breaky! No added sugar is a must.

Drink wise, green tea for breaky. Drink a glass of water with some drops of milk thistle in it. Have a glass of milk. Drink cold filtered water or fresh fruit juice (not the sort you buy in a super market)

If you eat clean and healthy your body will do the rest.

Anyone can say heres my new diet it works, infacy I've just invented the Brian diet! Glass of water for breakfast, lunch. Piece of popcorn for tea. Guaranteed to lose weight

Don't be conned by weight watchers and herbalife etc. It's all a money making con and your the people the scam!

Probably get loadsa grief now haha!!

The only diet as such i thought was any good was the general motors diet. Yes its real consists of loads fruit which i.like and a broth they recommend using fresh veg you follow it well it works and like other diets exercise is key.

All i do now is eat well avoid owt with added sugar or salt as most things have them naturally.

The Cambridge diet is essential a very low calorie diet consisting of milkshakes, soups and bars. You have 600 cals a day. It made me feel very unwell and as I said I lost the weight extremely quickly and put almost all of it back on pretty much just as quickly. A healthy eating plan is much better!

Fruit juice is full of calories, you should only eat fruit in its natural state, not juiced, dried or cooked.

The sugars and calories in natural fruit, are balanced by the roughage,

You could easily squeeze 10 oranges to make half a pint of juice, and drink it in a minute, but you couldn't eat 10 oranges.

Carrots are full of sugar, and should never be juiced, the sugar is not only full of calories, but bad for your system, especially insulin production.

Sugar

-------

Mr Kipling, small apple pie ( individual) contains 7 teaspoons of sugar.

A Mc Donalds large milk shake contains 35 teaspoons of sugar !

As default fries etc should have no salt not the other way round where you have to get fresh batch made if you do not want salt.

they add salt to make you thirsty , hence increase turnover, a bit like having salted snacks on a bar in pub.

I absolutely agree with you on that. but you dont need 5 meals a day to keep healthy. Thats the british inherited luxurious system. 3 meals a day is plenty. what you take in between goes into fat. Walking in a daily basis is a good enough routine to burn calorries. Especially after dinner. Avoid eating much pastas, bread ect at dinner time. That will make a slow loss in weight. A fast rush into losing weight can shock you metabolism and cause major health problems. I take whole mlik, eat lots of real butter and olive oil in my diet, cheese ect and calory rich diet but I struggle putting weight on as I walk much and I dont take 5 meals a day but I eat good portions of meals.

In some cases food every 3 hours is needed and helps weight loss, leaving longer times between meals, actually makes your body store fat, 5 small meals will always be better than 3 bigger meals, especially if you are diabetic.

5 small meals a day is a better alternative to 3 meals a day, it's just that we Britons don't seem to grasp the concept of smaller portion size so 5 meals seems insane. 5 meals will provide your body with a constant supply of energy throughout the day. Your body will be constantly digesting the food you eat, burning calories in the process. Your metabolism also increases when eating 5 meals a day as does muscle growth which is accelerated.

He takes full responsibility for his health and well-being, and the size and shape of his body. And doesn't look to anybody else to provide solutions to his own eating and drinking habits.

After a lifetime of being obese and trying different ways to lose weight, I was lucky enough to be referred to a brilliant dietician and fitness coach, by my doctor, and had 12 weeks of prescription exercise and diet advice,

believe me when your fat you try everything, ie, its my genes, slow metabolism, time, work, nurturing, family, and 1001 other excuses.

What the guy said to me was your fat because you eat more than your body needs, so fecking simple, since that I have lost about 5 stones, still another 5 stones to go.

for all you fatties out there, pop this on your fridge.

.

.The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own.

No apologies, no excuses,

No one lean on, rely on, or blame.

The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it.

This is the day your life really begins.

I eat a balanced diet...not much junk but I will not deny myself something of I fancy it. I exercise 4 times per week either at the gym or at home when my kiddies r in bed.

different things work for different people...good luck to u all....x

The sugars and calories in natural fruit, are balanced by the roughage,

You could easily squeeze 10 oranges to make half a pint of juice, and drink it in a minute, but you couldn't eat 10 oranges.

Carrots are full of sugar, and should never be juiced, the sugar is not only full of calories, but bad for your system, especially insulin production.

Sugar

-------

Mr Kipling, small apple pie ( individual) contains 7 teaspoons of sugar.

A Mc Donalds large milk shake contains 35 teaspoons of sugar !"

"Good luck. Today's my first day on the Cambridge diet.

Don't bother. I lost 4 stone on it last year in 3 months. Put 3 stone back on in 2 months. It's a waste of money and bloody horrible. Plus u will lose it quickly and have hideous floppy skin. Trust me it's not worth doing! "

I can't agree with this. I did Cambridge in 2006 and lost 10st. I regained 5st BUT I have also regained weight on other 'conventional' diets. I had loose skin - which I also had on Rosemary Conley. Once stretched, skin will be loose when you lose weight.

I'm currently on another VLCD (different make) and doing well. I'm learning new coping strategies for coping with emotions without turning to food which will help when I introduce conventional food back into my diet (I do have veg on this particular diet).

When it comes to diets, it's very much a case of 'one size doesn't fit all' ... you need to find what works for you as an individual.

Not really. The fact she's lost the weight over a long period of time will drastically increase the chance of it staying off.

Those that lose weight very quickly invariably put it back on. It's about forming healthier habits over time.

I joined diet plan. Its an online diet community and basically makes you rethink your eating habits. Its just old fashioned calorie counting with mini challenges to encourage people to eat their 5 a day and drink plenty of water. I also have to burn 200calories a day through exercise. Its no quick fix but hopefully its for life. Im already down a dress size and 11lbs lighter and I joined at the beginning of January.

Whatever diet you decide to follow has to be better than doing nothing at all Good Luck everyone. xxx

simple. For people wanting to lose weight space out your meals in smaller portions so have 5-6 meals a day. May not be possible to do this with your work but try to eat small amounts often than having big meals. Also a main bad one is people comfort eating, tray lay off the carbs after 5pm as that is when people will be resting towards end off the day. if possible also join your gym if not already joined and head their 3-4 times a week in classes or to do your own thing, cardio for 45mins each time will aid you to shed weight quicker. mind tho us guys dont like way to skinny women

Thanks that's my thoughts too. I haven't tried a proper diet before. And although I'm only two weeks in this does seem like a plan I can stick to. For me because I have so much to lose I really needed a good kick start to motivate me. However I do know its going to be about an 8 month programme of step two for me. At the end of 8 months though I will have retrained my body and mind as to what it needs. Thereafter its a lifelong plan of healthy eating and exercise.

The fact of the matter is that ketosis is unhealthy. So Cambridge diet, lighterlife etc. Any diet where you lose as much muscle as you do fat is NOT healthy. The fact that most people also suffer extreme hair loss is surely also an indicator that it's not a healthy way to lose weight?!

Do what you wish-but when you put on all the weight you have lost or you're miserable because you have saggy skin, thin hair and bad breath, just remember my words.

All diets work if you stick to them, the problem with diets such as slim fast, Cambridge etc is they are quick fix diets and are not ment to be a life style change and to be on for extended periods, the problem is with these diets are people go on them and when they have lost their weight they come off and go back to eating normal, that's why the weigh comes back on, your better off loosing the weight on a diet that's ment to be a life style change one that you can stay on when you have lost the weigh, such as weight watchers, slimming world etc

For me keeping the weight off is my biggest problem, I have lost weight so many times and got to my goal weight but I never manage to keep it off, but I have no one to blame but myself for that

Ketosis is the state your body goes into when you starve it. You lose weight quickly but as well as losing fat you lose muscle and there can be some nasty side effects. Look it up online for more info.

As for diet pills, I once tried some which were prescribed by a doctor but they were horrible-made me feel really unwell and didn't really make me lose any weight.

You most likely won't lose muscle due to the large amount of meat you'll be consuming.

Lost 2.5 stone in 2 months with Keto. Definitely not a long term diet but an effective short-term solution

I lost about 5 stone over 2 years. Am now about 168lbs and 13% bodyfat (was slightly more in my pics).

The answer is that there is no 'easy fix' and I think we all know, deep down that to lose weight, all one needs is a caloric deficit. Exercise helps, but I have read quite a few studies that show the weightloss with exercise is only slightly greater than without, assuming the deficit is the same.

Exercise, does however (depending on the type you do) help to preserve lean body mass, meaning that you will look better when you have lost the weight.

All diet plans (weight watchers, cambridge, paleo etc etc) incorporate some kind of deficit for weightloss. Keto (for those who do it) does this too, albeit in a rather more clever way.

The reason that people put weight back on is that they do the diet and then stop (after all, nobody wants to lose weight forever) and then go back to eating a surplus....meaning they will have to diet again at some point.

There are loads of calorie-tracking websites/apps out there and I think these are a far more useful tool - by tweaking with your intake you will find the calories required to lose weight at a steady pace and then can tweak them up to maintain when you feel you have lost enough weight. This way, you dont have to cut any one food group out (although I would advocate a healthy, balanced diet for other health reasons. However 'balance' can include all foods that are 'verboten' on diets, but every once in a while and in sensible ammounts).

Hope this helps - boring as it is.

...Just to add another boring bit of information - it is generally considered that to maintain (and indeed, build, but thats a different topic and you would need to be eating at a surplus) lean muscle mass, you need to be consuming 1-1.5grams of protien per half kilo of lean body mass (that which is not fat and organs - you can work it out online) per day.

Preferably, you will also incorporate resistance training....

Cambridge Diet (now Cambridge Weight Plan) is a low carb meal replacement diet. On the lower plans you have no 'real food', just the CD meals. Hence no meat but you are still safely in ketosis.

"Weight watchers, slimming world and similar organisations, make money by keeping you fat.

Your doctor is the first port of call, a good dietician and prescription exercise are 2 fantastic tools to use."

I lost 5 and a half stone with weight watchers and stopped going, I've put two back on and need to sort it out again.

I did it without buying a single product or paying a single fee as I became a meeting helper.

Once you reach your goal weight you pay nothing and can attend the meetings for free for life, it's more about support and encouragement and being with a group of people who are in the same place as you and like you trying to change that.

Not everyone has the ability to do this alone.

Good luck op

I carefully control my carbohydrate intake and test regularly via wee sticks and less frequently, form self blood testing and I can assure you, I am in ketosis and have been for many years."

I was hoping you'd weigh in here - you have forgotten more about keto than I'll ever know.

In general, for those not doing keto - maintain a moderate deficit, get enough protein and lift. VLCDs are crap for adherence, lean body mass loss and a variety of other things.

"You should still be losing weight then?! One does not remain in ketosis when one doesn't need to lose more weight. anyway, whatever suits you! I believe it to be the least healthy weight control method by far. But if it works for you, whatever! "

Yes I am. Slowly and surely, unless I over eat. I also have a blood lipid profile lower then the lowest recommendation of NICE and an HbA1c of 4.6

I am cured of lethargy, reflux and eczema. I have more energy now than I did in my forties. I'm no longer addicted to food nor am I controlled by it. Every system in my body functions on a far better level than they have ever been.

Your knowledge of ketosis needs a little brush up though.

You can research keto diets all over the place now.

"Surely the simple answer is move more eat fewer calories? "

The CICO theory doesn't hold up to scrutiny I'm afraid.

I'm not allowed to post links to good studies (or bad ones come to that) but there is a huge amount out there, far more than I can offer on the forums.

It's about understanding metabolism on a cell basis and how the current government dietary advice is funded by multi-nationals with nothing more than making the shareholders happy.

Nobody SHOULD be doing anything in particular other than try to get behind why any diet that has helped them lose weight cannot be sustained. Carbohydrates are addictive and contrary to popular belief (there's that dogma again) saturated fat does not make you fat or lead to heart disease. Now I know that's a HUGE sweeping statement but the evidence is out there to support it as is the evidence that Ancel Keyes, the bloke who told the American government in the 1950's that saturated fat is a killer, was funded to ignore evidence in his research that says completely the opposite.

Margarine is one molecule away from plastic. I'm quite sure humans were not supposed to eat food developed in a lab. Even one of the manufacturers of the leading brand has started to add butter to its product.

In the elderly, there is a direct correlation to Alzheimer's and low cholesterol.

We also need fat to metabolise all fat soluble vitamins such as Vitamin D, the lack of which causes such things as poor mental health and poor immune function.

I apologise for my long post but it's one of my soap boxes that I hope will prompt others to think and not simply accept something, just because it's repeated often enough.

If you want to discuss how statins are useless but still handed out like smarties (makes somebody rich) I'll start another thread.

Whilst I disagree with you CICO because..thermodynamics - it is not quite as simple as purely 'calories in, calories out' (as stated on packets of food etc) in that calorie values for foods are obtained by bomb calorimitry and the human body is not a bomb calorimiter, ergo it does not combust 100% of the material fed to it and it has to do more 'work' to derive energy from different macronutrients.

So yes, energy in, energy out is the bottom line, but each body processes energy slightly differently (in animal feeds we talk about feed conversion ratio or FCR) and energy yield is not equal from various foodstuffs.

Re: fats - I find it interesting that the link between dietary and serum cholesterol has been disproven in numerous studies but has not yet trickled down into the general conciousness and people still want to partake in low fat diets.

Fats are very nescessary for cellular function and we should not be afraid of consuming them.

Ketosis, as I understand it still creates an energy deficit by getting the body to break down, rather than store fats because no easier sources of energy (ie carbs) are made available.

NB for others reading - I do NOT think that keto is unhealthy. I think it is very healthy when done properly. The human body is a marvellous processor of all kinds of foods and I cannot see it doing any harm to derive your fuel from fats, and indeed, people like Topsy (and there are a lot of them about now) are living proof of this.

The point is that there are options for weightloss that dont need to be drastic and very calorie restrictive.

I am living proof that counting calories and making sure one obtains a decent macronutrient balance (in my case approx 1g per half kilo LBM protein /day, 0.3-.05 fats and the rest carbs) works - I know the energy I burn in a day (give or take) and I can adjust my intake to gain or lose weight as I see fit.

Topsy is proof that keto works.

As in all things, knowledge is power, and 'diets' always seem to want to deny you some part of knowing how they work to keep you coming back.

Fair enough. I'm currently on a ketogenic diet. Being in a state of ketosis has brought me positive health benefits. Apart from losing weight and being able to think straight now that my head is no longer in a carb induced fog, my 'bad'cholesterol level has halved and my blood sugar levels have dropped to within normal range, meaning I no longer need meds. Just for balance - my bloodwork is now tip-top (since becoming a healthy weight/bodyfat %age) and I'm not in Keto.

I never had any problems thinking clearly though, nor was I on any meds - which only goes to show different ways of eating suit different people.

Deleted last post as I cocked it up anyway I joined slimming world 5 weeks ago and am 1stone, 1 and 1/2 lbs lighter so far. No ready meals for me. You are encouraged to eat healthily, preferably home cooked! And to move more. I did weight watchers but found all the obsessive counting unsustainable long term. I'm always on a diet! Lol weight watchers phone ap is brilliant, the points system one, not the simple start one (or whatever the new thing is called).

Also highly recommend Jillian Michaels 30 day shred. Short, 20 minute, high intensity work outs, to tone up and drop weight fast. Sounds too good to be true, but they are amazing! After 5 minutes you will be out of breath and sweating and just when you think you can't carry on, she switches the exercise

Im not keen on certain diets, cos they are hard to stick to, and u feel you cant enjoy life. Instead just eat healthy. Drink purely water on weekdays, and only eat 20% carbs. And no sugary treats, and treat yaself to what u want on weekend. That way u can still enjoy life, and its easy to stick to these eating habits. And a healthy weight loss, is 1 or 1½ lbs per week, anything more than that and u cud gain it back.

Hi all, I've never dieted before but was at my heaviest ever weight and decided enough is enough. Although Nat loves me for me, I am unhappy with how I look. I started WW 2 weeks ago, and so far have lost 4 1/2 pounds. I am surprised at how easy it actually is. I thought it would be a chore but it's not. The only worry I have is keeping it fresh. The points system is great for keeping track. I'm aiming for 13st initially but who knows. I've never calorie counted before, but already starting to feel better for it. If anyone has any good tips or recipies, let me know Natman xx

I have two recommendations:

1- Portion control. Just eat slightly less than what you'd normally eat at meals. This means you don't really need to starve yourself but still reduce your calorie intake. You should be ending a meal feeling like you could still have eaten more, just resist the urge to eat seconds.

2- snacks / comfort eating / bored eating. Avoid this at all costs! The easiest way to do it is not buying these empty calories. If they are not available at home, you're much less likely to eat them.

Good luck!!!!
