I always understood it as, looking for people, like toys for sex. Without friendship type of thing.

But it's one of those undefinable phrase's and I like to get to know people and meet with people, for intimate times, not to use as a toy. So I wouldn't consider myself a 'hardened swinger'

I honestly don't know, but maybe it means people who are that old hat that they have become hardened to the emotional side of swinging? As opposed to the thrill of first time experiences maybe?

We think its simply peoples attitudes towards swinging that define them as hardened swingers. People who treat swinging as most people treat a night out at the pub. Very casual and laid back.
