There are some council estates I wouldn't visit someone in either. Before they tore it down, the nearest estate to where I lived then was the North Peckham...doctors wouldn't visit after certain hours!

I've not stayed in someones home overnight because I wasn't comfortable. He lived in a bedsit in a converted hotel. It was mainly single men that lived there. You had to go down the hall, down a half landing to use the loo: and you can imagine the state they were in!

That said, I live in Dulwich, hardly a dump but had a couple of meets ask if their cars would be safe parked on the street.

we were both born and raised on council estates.. many of our current friends are professional types, a large social mix of backrounds.. We have long discarded our prejudices about where someone comes from, what they own and their social status..totally bloody irrelevant..attitude and personality maketh the person no matter where they are from, how educated..or not, what they have or what don't! In our book, anyone without that simple attitude or judges of social standing or material wealth we'd avoid like the plague...still each to their own...innit!

That should of said walking through but you got my point!! One rods not far from me is where loads of drug dealers hang out and whenever there's trouble you can bet that street is in the paper. No chance you'd catch me walking round there late at night on my own!

And there's a block of flats not too far from me that the lift never works, they are really run down and the communal stair ways stink of piss, there's always needles and used j_nnys laying around. I know how bad they were coz my nan lived there before she died. They were lovely flats tho! (Well hers was at least coz she looked after it) but you wouldn't catch me in there again now I don't care how lovely the persons house was I was going to see! Lol x

It may indeed be a preference but we can certainly say something about the thought process that lead to it . It is a pre judgmental one !

Totally disagree with the non caring each to their own attitude for all situations

Each to their own means you don't care if a person is racist, homophobic , sexist , xenophobic tribal or any other such generalised sweeping judgment based on assumption stereotype fear ignorance as apposed to reason and data

When some nonchalantly pompously declare it's a preference suggesting said preference is immune to objective scrutiny and comment they are wrong

Some preferences seem to be innate , and harmless let's say she prefers blond haired men however I would suggest it nieve at best to accept or perpetuate that many so called preferences do not have a considered often misguided or ignorant (meaning derived from poor inaccurate information ) thought process behind them

The couple mentioned by the op although perfectly entitled to their ignorant opinion are not immune from us articulating why they are ignorant judgmental and rude to make a sweeping statement that suggests all people in a particular kind of housing are not worthy of the couples company

Guess what kind of accommodation I live in lol

"Should "professionals" be allowed to take up much needed Council homes "

I know what you mean but where do you draw the line?

By profession? By income? By money in the bank? It could go right down to anybody who owns a television above 22 inches.

Quite difficult once you start means testing for housing entitlement. What happens if a dustman does an open university degree and then becomes a lawyer?

Without getting into a Fabsters definition of professional, why shouldn't council areas have a mix of tenants?

That's the traditional thinking but in a situation where teachers and nurses can't afford to buy within travelling distance of their workplace, do we have to rethink?

There appears to me to be huge class divide on FAB. I find it fascinating, but also slightly disturbing that someone would openly state they are not looking for people who live in social housing, proving that the social stigma of class is alive even when it comes to sex. This is of course the same thing in relation to ethnicity, which has been discussed many times in different posts. M

I think some see peoples homes as a reflection of their life style, maybe she see's someone who lives in council accommodation as being unemployed or on a low income, meaning not having a very good job and not the type of person she wished to meet

That's not my opinion of people in council houses by the way but I do think lots see people in council houses as being poor or on low income

I cant see it as and different to those who ask for professional people myself, at the end of the day its upto the individual who they meet be that based on looks or income

Some are seeing it as a slight, others safety. I will not go anywhere I don't feel safe and a London council estate at night wouldn't make me feel safe. It doesn't mean I'm looking down on the person living there.

Yes very true, I once met someone in an area I didn't feel safe at all. My heart was pounding for all the wrong reasons and when the person I met opened the door and didn't look anything like the photo it was such a relief to be able to say, um I think you've lied to me a bit here and make my excuses and get out of there as fast as I could. "It may indeed be a preference but we can certainly say something about the thought process that lead to it .

Guess what kind of accommodation I live in lol "

Well done Taoist, you've articulated my thoughts on the "each to their own" and "personal preference" brigade perfectly. Two phrases that are guaranteed to stifle any meaningful (or stupid) discussion.

I don't know the ins and outs to be honest but it's helped mr notts daughter buy her first home, not £600k I might add lol. But going back to council housing, I feel there are too few to be offering them to people perhaps otherwise capable of homing themselves. I get the idea of mixing people up and I agree in theory thats a good thing, but not at the expense of housing the most vulnerable in society.

Somewhere near NE Derbyshire/S Yorkshire/Nottinghamshire border

A few years back the tabloids reported one of the leaders of a main union, gmb I believe. Lives in a council house yet earns over 100k a year.

So..

Low rent opposed to a high mortgage.

No repair bills

More disposable income.

Mmmm who the idiot?

It's bizarre, as I've no clue what is a council property, what's housing association, been purchased by resident, or is a buy to let property any more.

I'd choose where to spend my time based on area, who's there and what's on offer. But, I have heard of some dire areas to visit, but probably doesn't restrict itself to the type of property.

I'm from a council estate and lived in a council flat until a few years ago when I bought my house...my flat was better decorated though because at that time I had more disposable income. So now I own my house but desperately need to get the place looking like a home...not sure what that does for my social standing!!

As for intelligence, I have a degree so have academic intelligence, but also think growing up in a council estate with little money has given me 'street smarts' and maybe even helped me have common sense. I know lots of intelligent people who can be so stupid at times because they're not used to having to think for themselves.

Think I've lost myself a bit in my own ramblings here, but basically where you live is often a result of circumstance not intelligence...and intelligence comes in many different forms. I'd rather meet someone with common sense and the ability to hold a conversation than than a mensa IQ and no social skills (I know you can have both but it seems to be rare!) regardless of where they come from

Hi, Mr Garnett!

Not everybody lives on council estates by choice. Yes, I am lovely, and yes, I have a filthy mind, but it was necessity that caused me moving there for a while. Same assorted kinds of folk as elsewhere. My time there was as OK as it was in other places where the wind took me. Bloody stereotyping. Grrr.

I don't think it would be too difficult to articulate or illustrate why a persons income and their intelligence are not an exact correlation nor should be used to generalise assume or prejudge anything xx

I think this is just purely down to stereo typing. Where as the majority of council tennants are what some people see as a lower class, less educated or common. This is not always the case, I know plenty of people who have their own property and they are not to the standard of some council properties I have been in. But I can understand some peoples choice by not wishing to mix with these people purely because there is more chance of the council tennants being a bit on the tough side! (If that's how you might want to put it). Better to rule it out totally by just eliminating them from your preference!

"Just read a rather lovely looking ladies profile and was stunned by her last paragraph. She will not meet people from council flats lol!!!

Discuss......

I have no idea why you are stunned, Surely its up to the lady who she wants to meet or is that not allowed any more ?

Because she was saying that all council folk are less intelligent. "

that's fair enough mate but you didn't say that she had said that in your post ?

Probably right on that because he also led us up the garden path to make us think he lived in council property and now it transpires he doesn't. That's another trait that solicitors have

"There's probably some people on here that don't meet posh people, personally I've met someone from a council estate (though not from here) and I think they are lovely, they might have filthy minds and mouths but that's what appeals to me.

You make it sound as if we are a different breed altogether!

Not different breed, just different type of personality

Really? So you can tell if the man on the street is a council tenant or home owner by his personality then? "

Not sure about other areas but were I live you can spot the type of people that live in council estates

So many houses/ flats in council built estates are now privately owned (thanks to Thatcher) you can no longer tell which is which.

As been explained before I added it immediately after as I realised it was very relevant. Unfortunately someone posted before me so my post appeared one post after my original. Too far down for you to read lol.

Have to say my posts usually succeed in hitting the limit of replies but it's such a shame there's so much nit picking and nastiness.

I'd be quite happy if you closed it. I only posted as I had never come across a profile whereby someone was refusing to meet people from council flats as she felt they would be less educated and I wasn't sure if it was a fair comment or discrimination. Unfortunately the usual clique and took over. Shame.

"we were both born and raised on council estates.. many of our current friends are professional types, a large social mix of backrounds.. "

Can I just add I was raised in a council house in a very poor 'council' area of London hence why I raised my eyes at her profile.

My grandparents, sister two uncles live in council accommodation and I temporarily did too with a boyfriend before we bought a house together.

I am not offended by people having preference to who they choose to meet though. My attitude for those that are is - great - they have just shown themselves as someone you also don't care to spend any time with.

If she didn't put that and you somehow got a meet with her, had a great session in the bedroom and after during idle chat she started making unkind comments about people in council accommodation, I'm sure you'd be pretty angry.

So no harm done - block her and find someone who shares your values instead.
